This week marks the start of Hispanic / Latinx Heritage Month - beginning in 1968 as a week-long observance and then signed into law in 1988 as a month-long celebration, Hispanic / Latinx Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. These four weeks commemorate several anniversaries of Latin American countries’ independence while honoring our Hispanic and Latinx communities, cultures, and contributions to our country.

I am a proud 1st generation Cuban American who migrated to the United States at the age of four with my two year old sister because my parents wanted us to have a better life and a future filled with opportunities and possibilities. My parents are the epitome of the American Dream. They came to this country without knowing the language, customs or lifestyle, however through hard work and a desire for a better life became homeowners after five years and business owners shortly after. They inspire me every day to work hard and dream big because that is what truly makes this country great.

This country was built and created by immigrants all in pursuit of a better life for themselves and their families. I could not be more proud of my Hispanic/ Latinx background & ethnicity and invite you all to celebrate and better educate yourselves on this rich and diverse community whose culture and contributions have helped make this country exceptional!
