Big Oly. The Car that was built in secret and won the Baja 1000, twice.

Parnelli Jones had already won the Indianapolis 500. The race every driver in the world wanted to win. He didn’t need the desert.

But at a Christmas party in 1967, a race truck builder named Bill Stroppe told the room that Jones wasn’t tough enough for off-road racing. Jones took it as a dare. He found a mechanic, sketched a truck on a napkin over lunch, and built it in secret. A beer company called Olympia put up ten thousand dollars to sponsor it. The Crazy C**t became Big Oly.

In November 1971, he drove a thousand miles of Mexican desert, start to finish, and broke the course record by over an hour. The first driver to ever win both the Indy 500 and the Baja 1000.

The following year, fifteen miles from the finish, they ran out of gas. He flagged down a passing Volkswagen, transferred fuel through a windshield wiper hose into a tequila bottle, and got back on the road. He won the race anyway.

Parnelli Jones died in June 2024. He was 90.
