EXCITING NEWS: Rhode Island is just steps away from outlawing the cruelty of foie gras. This inhumane product comes from force-feeding ducks and geese with a pipe shoved down their throats, causing their livers to expand to ten times their normal size.
When the birds’ livers (intentionally) become diseased, they suffer terribly. According to one former employee of a foie gras facility, “The best way to maximize profits is to get the biggest—and hence, the most diseased—liver. As my supervisor stated, ‘The point of gavage [forced tube-feeding] is to make a duck as sick as possible, to bring them to the brink of death.’”
RHOSE ISLAND RESIDENTS: Last month, Farm Sanctuary-led legislation to ban this practice and the sale of this inhumane product passed out of the Rhode Island House by an overwhelming margin, and it’s now under consideration in the state Senate.
