Ati ɖeka me wɔ na ave o. (A single tree cannot make a forest). A single tree refers to an influential, prominent, elderly or rich person in society e.g., a King, President or Chief. The forest also refers to an institution, family or community. The proverb therefore depicts that a rich or prominent person alone cannot constitute a family, region, state or nation. There are forest areas in the Ewe land, and during the farming season it calls for communal spirit and team work. The proverb teaches against over-reliance on individual efforts but advocates cooperation and unity among the people to achieve set goals. It inculcates teamwork and communal spirit among the people.

The “Wovoe” Collection.

“Wovoe” is a collection that I wanted to reflect spirituality. In the Ewe language, Wovoe translates to “Act Bad” or “To do bad”. For years and probably still years to come, when we here the word “voodoo” (a sensationalist and derogatory Western creation from the word Vodun), it’s been demonized and made to believe that it’s an unholy way of seeking spirituality, when in reality, the word in itself means God or Spirit if you will. It is a way for us to connect to our spirituality and our ancestors to seek guidance in our every day endeavors. In certain ceremonies, the outfits worn for traditional spiritual dances are adorned in fringe. In my eyes when I see these dances, I see how the weight of the fringe moves with the spirit. It made me wonder what it would feel like to have clothes move with you spiritually.
