I’m Abby Olson, raised in Columbus, Ohio but currently in Paris, France working towards my BFA in Fashion Design at Parsons Paris/The New School. I believe fashion has the power to change lives and through my designs I hope to change them for the better. I’ve designed collections for Alternative Fashion Week, costumes for theatre performances, as well as custom commissioned pieces for clients.

Inhabited Abstractions

This project is a deconstruction of the Balenciaga “Baby Doll” dress mixed with the motorcycle jacket archetype through the lens of the Goth Subculture in the 1980s. The motorcycle jacket was originally designed for practicality and protection from the elements. After repeated depiction of the motorcycle jacket in Hollywood as the clothing of rebellious youth, this archetype gained popularity among many different subcultures. In the 1980s, the goth subculture used the motorcycle jacket as a staple in their style. Designed for movement, this jacket has been involved in many different kinds of movement. This project focuses on movement and volumes that Balenciaga revolutionized through his methods of construction.

“Under The Blanket Of Night”

What have I been up to in Paris? Well, I’ve been working hard to create art in my class and trying to finish the semester out strong. Moving to Paris has not been easy but it definitely has been rewarding. Getting to make pieces like this is so fulfilling. This piece specifically was inspired by the way we use blankets to create a virtual reality for ourselves, somewhere safe from the world around us. Often people used weighted blankets to reduce anxiety. Being made out of wood allowed for the weight of the blanket to be reminiscent of that of a weighted blanket.
