We went to the Safari Room in Mission Hills for dinner this weekend on the way back from visiting the Reagan Library exhibit Cowboys History & Hollywood. Strong cocktails, friendly service and good food. It opened in 1957. i’m so glad it’s still here, especially since the recent closing of Taix and Cole’s.

Happy Easter!!!

Our family has always been into deviled eggs even before they became trendy. I’ve been wanting to do the dyed deviled eggs like this. The recipe I used said prep time 30 minutes. No way, my husband and I worked together and it took way longer than that but they are very impressive.

It’s just too much!!! Taix and Cole’s closing the same day! My husband and I went to Cole’s 2 weeks ago and they told us they had a new owner lined up and they weren’t closing, but we didn’t believe it.

I’ve been going through my personal collection of postcards, matches, and cocktail stirrers. Unfortunately, I have nothing from Cole’s. One of my favorite old-school restaurants is Clearman’s Steak N’ Stein. I found these items from my personal collection. Do you remember what the copper bar looked like before they remodeled? It was amazing! Granite does not quite do the same for me. Yes, they did take out the best room in the restaurant in order to expand the bar but at least it’s still here and the food is really good.



I’m looking forward to having dinner tonight at Taix. We are celebrating our 36th anniversary.

Cole’s Originators of the French Dip. After our visit to the Grammy Museum, we decided to have a late lunch at Cole’s. We went to Taix on February 13th before going to a show downtown. We arrived late at 5:15 and we were lucky to get the last 2 stools at the bar. We have a dinner reservation for Thursday, March 26 to celebrate our 36th anniversary. I doubt we’ll be seated in the main dining room with the big booths since it’s only the two of us. I took a few pictures in the bathroom because I always like it when they have a separate area for you to primp. I heard the artwork was stolen in the ladie’s bathroom. I hope they were able to retrieve it.

A few weeks after visiting the Wienermobile at King Richard’s Antique Center we had an early dinner at the Northwoods Inn in La Mirada. We usually go to the one in San Gabriel. It was hard for me to get exterior pictures without encroaching on other people because it was so busy, even at 5 o’clock. As far as the food goes I recommend sticking with the sandwiches. My ribeye was not as good as the bone in ribeye at their sister restaurant Steak N’ Stein. Also, it was very loud but still a fun place to go to even just for peanuts and a gimlet! Of course, they serve the garlic cheese bread and salad with the red cabbage.
