Who's heard of Veloy Vigil (1931–1997) ?

He was an American artist who changed how people view Southwest and Native American art. Born in Colorado to a family of Pueblo Indian and Spanish descent, he worked hard as a commercial artist before moving to Taos, New Mexico, to paint full-time. Vigil broke away from traditional styles of Western art.

He loved music and rodeos, which helped him fill his paintings of horses and landscapes with a his sense of style and movement.

Since he passed away in 1997, there is a limited amount of his art available. Major museums, like the Denver Art Museum or the Heard Museum, display his work, making his paintings, prints, and sculptures valuable pieces of American art history.

We're happy to have two original pieces of Veloy Vigil art in the June 10th event.

What type of turquoise is this?
Comment your guess before reading below.
It’s Bisbee turquoise! Mined out of the famous Lavender Pit in Bisbee, Arizona, this turquoise was actually discovered as a byproduct of massive copper operations back in the 20th century.

Back in the 1950s and 60s, copper miners used to sneak these rough nuggets out in their lunchboxes because the mining company was mostly interested the copper. Hence why you’ll hear occasionally referred to as “lunchbox turquoise”

Because the mine closed down decades ago, authentic Bisbee has become highly sought after.

Jim Olson and Bobbi Jeen Olson are attending Dick Powell’s memorial today. We recently found this letter Rowdy Olson wrote to Dick back when he was a little boy. Seeing it today of all days really hits home. Dick was a true friend to the family for decades, and we're going to miss him.

This was Bobbi Jeen Olson's very last interview with our great friend, Dick Powell, before he passed. He was a true gentleman and a lifelong friend to the family. They just don't make 'em like Dick anymore. Rest in peace, friend.

His service is this Saturday, which Jim and Bobbi will be attending.
