Great day to wear garments I have made. My husband Liam in his great kilt is wearing a linen shirt I made him. The buttons on the collar are antique buttons. I also made the green dress, smock and coif. The dress is called a kirtle. It is made of a green linen with hand made buttons. I also make the white smock out of linen. The coif is a white linen/cotton blend. The coif has a rectangle brim and a triangle back.

Hi everyone!!!! Our book being peer reviewed and gaining ground in writing. We are talking to a publisher about getting printed! We are still in need of pictures of ladies obviously pregnant. We are looking for pre 1980’s. So if you know of any family or friends with good pregnancy pictures or portraits please let me know. We will forever be grateful and you will get the pictures published in a book and be acknowledged. Please this is a key part of our research. Showing the everyday women in their child bearing years of experience. Also if you have any anecdotes that you remember from yours, mother, grand mother, etc… Please feel free to share those to. They might be a good reference point to.

My great grand mother had a normal pregnancy from all accounts. She had already had a hand full of sons so she was well experienced. When she went into the hospital to have her son though the doctor wasn’t there yet. So the nurses who were not allowed to deliver a baby knocked her out and tied her legs together. When she woke up her baby had been born with cerebral palsy and was deaf. He had already been in the birth canal so had lost oxygen which caused his disability for life. This story of her mother in law affected my grand mother so much. When she went in to have my mother. The doctor wasn’t there yet so nurses tried to put my grand mother asleep. She knocked the sleeping medication out of the nurses hands. She said at age 90 she could still hear the cone hitting and bouncing off the floor. She felt that she had saved my mom from becoming like her brother in law.

Now these stories have to do with delivery. We are more interested in the actual pregnancy experience of women. My grand mother said that a bandage should be put over the belly button so it isn’t seen through the shirt. Showing your bellybutton was immodest to her. Like this finding out the does and don’t of each era’s fashion is what we are looking for. So family journal entries and guidances like this would be fun to reference.

This has been a fun project! Ordered a busk online. Drew out sports, Poseidon, Tudor roses, horseback riding and ferret. Used a post Elizabethan busk for inspiration. Carved it out with an exacto blade. Just today I added old old English furniture polish to bring out the carving. Then soaked it into beeswax and orange oil.

Beading chronicles continues. I have just finished with all the pearls. All I need is two mire ouches which I will have to purchase since I was just 2 shy of what I needed. Of course that will have to wait until I get paid. But now I can start focusing on the rest of the project. 32 large fresh water pearls. Approximately 160 small fresh water pearls. 16 ouches once I have put in the final 2 ouches. I have been working on this Saturday evening. Just finished what I could and it’s Wednesday afternoon. I have broken 3 needles with the project. Two regular sewing needles and one beading needle.

Progress is being made on my A&S project after all the alterations to the plan and last minute arrivals on materials. The neckline trimming is ready for me to start beading. The linen thread took a while to make it here. Under the velveteen is linen canvas. The velveteen is 💯 cotton. The pearls have arrived so this weekend beadings will commence! I did learn that a kirtle like this would have been stiffens using bents (a stiff grass) instead of reeds. But, since I don’t have any bents and I already have the reed boning I am just going to cite that the stiffening would have been bents and go ahead with using what I have. This linen thread is very strong and is coated in wax.

Just finished my first sewing project for my husband Liam. It’s a funny story. My friends told me about a sweater curse. It’s when your dating someone. If you make something that is time consuming it usually ends up with the person leaving. I laughed and thought that funny. Then I realized I had accidentally done that by making gifts for people my siblings have dated. So I refused to let myself make anything for people I dated or who were dating family members until they were securely wedded. I know, these sort of superstition are silly. But I didn’t want to risk anything. This shirt was started a while ago but I recently found it and finished it for my husband. We are coming up on our two year anniversary. Good time to finish this. This shirt is made of 💯 linen. The buttons are bone buttons I bought from an antique shop. The thread is poly cotton blend. This shirt is designed from an 18th century shirt directions.

Sneak peak at what I am working on! A Tudor Redded kirtle. Materials are; linen on 4 of the layers, 100%cotton midnight velveteen, and boning out of reed and wood. The busk inspired from a 16-17th century busk. But altered to the taste of AnnaBelle who will be wearing it. Let’s See if you can find all her favorite things!

I made this dress!!!! My friend Lydia draped me. I made a mock up of the draping then made a perfected pattern. The green dress and white underdress is made out of light weight linen. The dark green was made from a mystery cellulosic fiber. The white is designed to be a pull over underdress. The dark green is a lace up tunic about mid thigh long. The light green I made buttons for. I also made the hat out of linen. I’m just hose and appropriate shoes. It was cool finding modern inspiration for this dress through Disney’s Brave. Which was inspired by a Victorian version of the Shakespearean play McBeth. Which may have gotten it’s inspiration from a medieval manuscript from the 1400’s.
