When you purchase new leather goods, whether they are shoes, belts, wallets, purses, or bags the first thing that they need is conditioning and protection.
Think about it, that leather was sitting around on a shelf for months, if not years, and then made into your product, which then sat on shelves for months and months. The leather is most likely dry and without protection from the elements. Brand new leather products need loving too.
This Beckett Simonon full-grain leather messenger bag is made from 100% Italian Vachetta leather, which is the exact same quality and type of leather that you get on your designer bags and purses that cost 10s of thousands of dollars.
The owner obviously wants to protect it.
This bag is an excellent buy at around $289 brand new and if it is taken care of, should last 40-50 years. It will only become more beautiful with age, as it develops a patina.
My goal here isn't to change the coloring, just to hydrate, pack in coloring, and to protect the leather.
I began with washing the leather, because I always like to remove any dirt and dust from the pores of the leather, even when it is brand-new.
I then conditioned the leather with Saphir Renovateur. This leather was very dry. It took 5 applications to fully hydrate.
Next, I used Saphir 1925 Medaille d'Or Creme waxes in a light brown.
Lastly, I applied a light coat of the Saphir Pate de lux in a light brown and a neutral color. I used the neutral around any stitching to keep from turning the white stitching a light brown color.
This bag is ready for many seasons to come, and will age properly because it has been cared for from new. I know that this client will be happy.
On a personal note, the quality and build of this bag is obscenely good for this price point. I don't generally start seeing this quality, thickness, and amount if leather on bags until they reach around minimum $500.00, but usually about $800.00. I am a big fan of the design and quality of Beckett Simonon.
