For Day 13 of our Black History Month Black Business Spotlight, we highlight a Wilmington brand built on resilience, accountability, and second chances: Carry My Own Weight.
Located at 411 New Castle Avenue in Wilmington, the Black-owned clothing brand was founded by Thomas “Gash” Jackson, a local entrepreneur who turned his life experience into a message of empowerment and self-reliance.
A brand born from adversity,
Jackson created the brand after overcoming major challenges in his life, including time spent in the prison system. His journey from incarceration to entrepreneurship became the foundation of the company’s message: take accountability, work hard, and carry your own responsibilities.
The phrase “Carry My Own Weight” started as a personal mantra and eventually grew into a full clothing line. What began as T-shirts sold out of the trunk of his car has evolved into a recognized streetwear brand with a physical storefront in Wilmington.

Founded in 2018 in Wilmington’s Southbridge community, the brand is built around core values of:
