Different mountain. Same incredible day. ❤️

I told everyone in my Sunday morning email that the boys, Erik, and I were heading up Mount Monadnock.

Apparently everyone else had the same idea. 😂

It was completely packed, so we made a quick change of plans and headed to Miller State Park to climb Pack Monadnock instead.

And maybe that made it an even better memory.

Not the mountain we planned.

Still moving upward, side by side. ❤️

The views were incredible, including Mount Monadnock off in the distance.

Apparently on a clear day you can see all the way to Boston. It was a little too cloudy and rainy for that today, but I don’t think any of us cared.

Sometimes the day doesn’t go the way you pictured it.

You change the plan and keep going.

And sometimes Plan B turns out pretty dang good. ❤️

37 orange bricks. 2 green ones for the stem.

No triangles. No points to match.

And one brick right in the middle that gets somebody’s name on it. ❤️

That’s the whole quilt.

Am I crazy… or do these Halloween fabrics work ridiculously well together? 🎃😂

Because I sincerely feel like they belong together.

But now I need you to make one decision for me.

What accent fabric should I use for this Halloween quilt?

🤍 CREAMY OFF-WHITE
🩶 LIGHT SILVERY GRAY

I keep going back and forth, so I’m officially handing this decision over to you. 😂

That sassy little feeling when the quilt is finished, the photos are taken, and you’re officially allowed to show her off to anyone who will look. 💁‍♀️😂

Because finishing a quilt deserves a moment.

The cutting. The piecing. The seams you may or may not have ripped out. The fabric you almost saved for “someday.”

And now look at her.

Finished. Photographed. Feeling fabulous. 💁‍♀️❤️

Go ahead. Show her off.

You made the dang quilt.

You're standing in the middle of the pile.

The fat quarters. The stack you've been adding to for years.

And you have no idea what the heck to make with any of it. 😂

I don't think that's a fabric problem.

I think it's a decision problem.

We buy fabric we love. We bring it home into the studio. We fold it, we set it right on the shelf, and we save it for that someday quilt.

And it sits there. For years.

So today I'm making the deciding part a heck of a lot easier.

Nine fabrics does not have to mean nine decisions.

Because that’s usually how it goes. 😂

You want to make the quilt. You love the quilt. And then you’re standing in your sewing room for an hour holding fabric up against fabric wondering what on earth goes with what.

So here’s what I’d do instead.

You choose three.

Then call two people you love and let them each choose three.

That’s your nine. ❤️

And now it isn’t just a quilt you made. It’s a quilt the three of you picked out together.

Three fabrics for your main.
Three for your secondary.
Three for your contrast.

Three little fabric families.

And suddenly you can stop deciding and start quilting.

And someday, when somebody asks you about that quilt, you won’t just tell them the pattern.

You’ll tell them who chose what. ❤️

Some fabric is just too pretty to cut into tiny pieces. 😍

And Tula Pink is DEFINITELY that fabric.

So when I put these Biscotti kits together, I wanted a pattern that would actually let those big, gorgeous prints show off a little.

🎃 There’s something different about this pumpkin quilt…

And it’s hiding right in the middle. ❤️

I am completely in love with how this patchwork pumpkin came together. The colors, the scrappiness, the fact that it looks like fall exploded all over my sewing room. 😂🧡

But see that little light spot right in the center?

I put it there for a very special reason.

Because around here, I don’t just want us making pretty quilts.

I want us making quilts that mean something.

I’m sharing all the details about this one very soon, but first…

You know the fabric I mean. 😂

The one you bought because you absolutely LOVED it.

Then you brought it home, folded it beautifully, put it on the shelf…

and decided it was apparently too special to actually use.

I’ve done it too.

But after 30 years of quilting, I keep coming back to this:

The good fabric doesn’t become more meaningful sitting on a shelf.

It becomes meaningful when you make something with it.

When it gets dragged onto the couch.

Wrapped around your grandbaby.

Packed off to college.

Given to a friend who needs some extra love.

Or put on YOUR bed because yes, you’re allowed to make the beautiful quilt for yourself too. ❤️

So use it.

Cut the good fabric.

Make the first block.

Let it become something somebody gets to love instead of something you keep saving for “someday.”

Maybe someday is today. 🧵
