Mask of Mictlantechutli lord of the underworld. The front design includes two priest waiting for the sun rise. Both priest are chanting/praying communicating with each other described with the speech bubble coming from their mouth. Also on the design is “Disco de la muerte” or disk of death. The “halo” around the skull symbolizes the setting and rising of the Sun, as the change from day into night was perceived to be a cycle of the death and rebirth of the solar system. The symbolic meaning of the skull imagery itself is more difficult to identify, but it is thought that it may allude to the ritual practice of human sacrifice or be a representation of the Teotihuacan god of death, Mictlantecuhtli

Mictlantecuhtli mask decorated with a ceremonial priest on top of a conch shell. Quetzalcoatl on the cheeks a butterfly on the left and a flower on the right. The Aztecs named the conch shell trumpet quiquiztli, and the musicians who played them “quiquizoani.” This is the instrument that Quetzalcoatl played to defeat the devious challenge of Mictlantecuhtli, the Lord of the Dead, and reclaim the ancestral bones of humanity. It was also used by priest to call upon blood offerings and by warriors in combat. The Aztecs believed that butterflies were in charge of taking warriors' souls, who died in battle or were sacrificed. The butterfly and flowers were symbolic of the souls of brave dead warriors.

The mask of a warrior. With a white and red finish. The mask tell the story of the journey after death. Treatment of the body and the destiny of the soul in the afterlife depended in large part on one's social role and mode of death, in contrast to Western beliefs that personal behavior in life determines one's afterlife. People who eventually succumbed to illness and old age went to Mictlan, the dark underworld presided by the skeletal god of death, Mictlantecuhtli, and his consort Mictlancihuatl. In preparation for this journey, the co**se was dressed in paper vestments, wrapped and tied in a cloth bundle, and then cremated, along with a dog to serve as a guide through the underworld. The path to Mictlan traversed a landscape fraught with dangers, including fierce beasts, clashing mountains, and obsidian-bladed winds. Having passed these perils, the soul reached gloomy, soot-filled Mictlan, "the place of mystery, the place of the unfleshed, the place with no exits, Mictlan was a place of no return. The souls of warriors who died in battle or were captured and killed in ritual sacrifice would lift up the sun from the eastern horizon to the midpoint of the sky beginning each dawn. It is said that they did this for four years, after which time they were transformed into hummingbirds and butterflies. The Aztecs were a warrior society, and the eagle and jaguar were commonly associated with warriors and war.
