They called my kids "feral", and I felt embarrassed.
Dirty feet. Skinned knees. Wild hair. Grass and mud stains on everything.
One day, when they wanted to run out and play in the rain, I yelled "stop!" because they had their brand new dresses on. I didn't want them to get dirty *again*.
But wait. Why stop? Who are we trying to be fancy for... the opinions of other parents? That's ridiculous.
Finally, it all clicked. This is *exactly* what I've always wanted. A little house in the woods of Maine. Land. Chickens. A garden. A pond. Two sweet little girls, living their best life.
Yep, we are always dirty. We are outside *all the time*. They go through 3-4 outfits a day. If you have toddlers who love to be outside, you understand.
Are they feral kids? Oh yeah. Wicked. 🌲 And I'm so, so glad.
The can climb, balance, jump, and run. They're learning about bugs and animals and weather and plants. They are brave, empathetic, confident, and sweet.
And I'm so thankful.
