I was working the counter yesterday, and during the afternoon a large party of mixed family came into the shop to browse.
After a time, one of the mothers came to the counter to make a purchase. Her daughter was with her. “You have a very cool store,” the daughter said.
“Thank you!” I replied. “We think so, too.”
“You have a dinosaur that starts with Q, and that’s amazing,” the teen continued, “because my name starts with Q, too.”
“Wow,” I remarked. “I did not know we had a dinosaur that starts with Q. What’s the dinosaur?” I asked.
“Queen-zoo-saurus.” She struggled for the sounds.
“It’s pronounced chian-joh-saurus,” chimed in the knowledgeable mother, who had obviously heard of the oddly named Qianzhousaurus.
“And what’s your name?” I asked, returning my attention to the teen. I really couldn’t come up with a girl’s Q name on the spot.
“Quinn,” she said.
“Very nice,” I replied.
Quinn then pointed to another girl in the group, also about her age, probably a cousin. “Her name is Quinn, too,” she happily announced.
“What a quinn-cidence,” I quipped.
A dozen family members all immediately erupted into laughter. The terrible pun had apparently never occurred to any of them before; and if it had, whoever did elected not to share.
“That’s awful!” one of the mothers guffawed.
“What can I say,” I smiled. “I’m a writer.”
