Yesterday, she was just an admirer; watching a beautiful Black ballerina on stage, dreaming of one day doing the same.

Today, it’s Nyah putting in the work, loving the craft, and embracing her own moments. She is dancing alongside her peers, center stage in their very own performance.

Tomorrow: One day meeting the inspiration. Coming face-to-face with the graceful, skillful, and legendary Misty Copeland. Seeing her perform live and in person.

Writing Her Legacy: Nyah is becoming the inspiration. Nyah isn’t just following a path; she’s building her own. She is destined to raise the bar, inspire the next generation, and be the living example of everything she once dreamed of becoming.

More Than a Book Club—This Was A Masterclass in Intentional Learning

The “Under the Goal Post Book Club” was the title, but the experience was a true adventure. Yesterday, I had the incredible privilege of reading My Trip To Jamaica: The Land We Love to the preschoolers at East Liverpool Preschool in Ohio.

The intentionality began the moment I arrived. Coordinated by Deborah Oberlein of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in partnership with the school district and Student Ambassador Aiden Durst, this wasn’t just a reading; it was a major production. Aiden is a young man of immense vision, supported by a dedicated community including Director of Communications Megan Hoffrichter Hernandez, board leaders, and teachers like Olivia Brant, Miranda Cunningham, and Sydney Dawson.

The Experience:

The layout was breathtaking. The team designed four immersive stations featuring:

• Cultural Immersion: Jamaican flags, tropical fruits, and vibrant music.

• The Journey: Suitcases packed with souvenirs for the kids to take home, globes for orientation and navigation, and even “travel snacks” in drawstring bags.

• Student Excellence: East Liverpool High School Career Tech students manned the cameras and captured every moment with professional precision.

The Impact:

After being mic’d up, I shared the story of Jamaica and my own travel experiences. Seeing the community m, the staff, volunteers, and mentors, work tirelessly to support Aiden’s vision was a powerful reminder of what happens when we invest in our future leaders.

My takeaway for educators and mentors:

If you want to inspire, create environments that go beyond the traditional learning environment. Being “extra” is exactly what it should feel like when you are intentionally shaping the next generation.

Thank you to Aiden, Toys for Tots - Ohio, AT Wilson, and the entire EAST LIVERPOOL CITY SCHOOLS DISTRICT & community. You are making a difference!

What an incredible experience yesterday! I want to extend a huge thank you to Digital Arts and Cinema Technology High School in Brooklyn, NY and specifically Tania Valencia for inviting me to speak during their Career Day.

If I’m being honest, I never imagined I’d be sharing my military journey with so many students who are standing on the threshold of their adult lives. It was an honor to offer perspective as they prepare to make some of their most significant decisions yet. I hope my story sparked something in them that paves the way for their future greatness.

My 5 Key Takeaways for the Students:

1. Prioritize your education.
2. Develop a solid plan.
3. Remain flexible with the details.
4. Build and nurture your network.
5. Execute with purpose—and never quit.

To God be the glory.

Innovation met education last night and the energy was electric. There is nothing more rewarding than watching growth and development happen in real time, especially when it involves the future of our youth. If you are wondering how we turned Black History Month into a high-stakes thrill ride, here is the breakdown.

We hosted an original game show for the Boys and Girls Club titled Who Wants to Win a Pizza Party. Based on the classic millionaire format, this was a rigorous test of knowledge regarding Black History. One representative was chosen by their peers to take the hot seat, backed by a series of lifelines designed to teach them how to leverage resources and community:

• The +1: Collaborating with a peer to find the solution.
• 50:50: Eliminating two incorrect options.
• Phone a Friend or 60-Second Search: Utilizing digital tools and research skills.
• Ask a Staff: Tapping into the expertise of mentors.
• Poll the Crowd: Relying on collective community knowledge.
• Ask the Host: Seeking guidance from the moderator.
• Skip the Question: Strategic advancement to the next round.

To turn up the heat, we introduced “The Ultimatum” at levels 5, 10, and 14. Staff interrupted the game to offer the group a smaller, guaranteed prize if they walked away. Every single time, the kids unanimously chose to double down and keep going. Their confidence was unshakable.

Even when our lead representatives—Talia, Lauren, and Carlos—were called for dismissal throughout the night, the momentum never faltered. The crowd stepped up, selected new leaders, and kept the mission alive.

A play-by-play couldn’t fully capture the atmosphere, but the brilliance of these students was undeniable. I’ve shared the questions below so you can test your own knowledge and see if you could have kept up with these sharp young minds.

Today, we honor a man whose life was a testament to the power of nonviolent resistance and the pursuit of justice: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Born Michael King Jr., he rose from Atlanta, Georgia, to become the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate of his time, changing the fabric of American history forever.

A Legacy Built on Courage:

• 🎓 A Brilliance Ignited: Entering college at just 15, he earned his doctorate from Boston University, dedicating his life to understanding sociology and theology to better serve humanity.

• 🚌 The First Spark: From leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott to co-founding the SCLC, he turned the tide against segregation through the strength of peaceful protest, inspired by Gandhi.

• 📢 The Dream: Standing before thousands at the March on Washington, his “I Have a Dream” speech became the heartbeat of a movement that demanded jobs, freedom, and equality for all.

• 💰 Ultimate Sacrifice: He lived his values—donating his entire $54,123 Nobel prize money back to the movement and spending his final days fighting for economic justice for sanitation workers.

Why We Must Never Forget:

Dr. King was arrested 29 times and faced relentless surveillance by the FBI, yet he never wavered. He faced the reality of a segregated America—even spending his honeymoon in a funeral parlor because hotels were closed to Black families—and decided that the world must change.

His legacy is not just a page in a history book; it is a living mandate. We must never, under any circumstances, allow his efforts to be forgotten or his message to be diluted. His fight against poverty, war, and racism remains the blueprint for a better world.

Let us carry his “Mountaintop” vision forward. The struggle for justice is a baton passed to every generation.

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

I don’t know what it is about the name Wichita but look how@they spelled it back in 2002 when I was a young buck in the game. I’m guessing the extra “W” was my accent which might have stuck even after I spelled it out for them. 🤷🏾‍♂️
