I've collected vintage jewelry for many years, but more recently have really sought to learn the history and story behind the collectible brands. Today I'll share a bit about WEISS jewelry, which was manufactured for nearly 30 years in the 1940s-1960s. Albert Weiss started the company in New York in 1942 after working for other jewelry producers, including Coro. He became known for producing high quality, handcrafted jewelry pieces, which included imported Austrian rhinestone crystals; he was among the first to use aurora borealis stones in the 1950s. Very collectible pieces feature rhinestone butterflies, insects, fruit and flowers; Christmas tree designs; maltese cross designs, and long-stemmed enamel flowers. Authentic pieces almost always have smooth, shiny rhodium-plated backs, as opposed to more recent fake pieces that may have textured backs. Many Weiss pieces are unmarked, but markings can include WEISS in block or script, "Albert Weiss," "A.W., Co.," and "WEISS Co." A new line of Weiss jewelry is produced today out of Brooklyn, NY, under the name "Albert Weiss Collection."
