This Old Quilt

This Old Quilt This Old Quilt is a full service stitchery forwarding the traditions of the Quilt, offering antique quilt repair and quilt top finishing.

There’s something about old quilts and the story they tell. It’s in the odd-spaced stitches and quirky points, in the rich dyes, in the skill and artistry developed in less convenient times. New quilts tell stories too— in an era of mass produced goods, quiltmaking thrives as an art form with a rich cultural heritage of commemoration and cause. This video has stirred up some controversy in the old and antique quilt community. It raises awareness about a growing trend to cut up quilts for use in new projects like the quilted chore coat. In doing so it asks important questions, though I don’t agree with Mary Fons’ view on preservation, conservation thinking, and repair on all accounts. These are some of the things we’ll be discussing in Ann Wasserman’s quilt repair and preservation virtual workshop that runs for six weeks on Zoom. There’s still time to register, I believe.

People who cut up vintage quilts to make chore coats and other quilt clothes and accessories must stop. Quilts are irreplaceable objects. They are records of...

What a surprise to find a Ladies Art Company Pineapple No. 2 on eBay this morning! I once restored one for a dealer and took a pattern from it, to be published someday. I've verified it in a catalog as early as 1898, but it probably began in sampler quilts much earlier. I love pieced then appliquéd designs!

In hindsight, 2015 was a pretty productive year! Restoring old and antique quilts for clients near and far, re-homing quintessential finds, machine quilting quilts— including three long-standing UFOs and a big brother/little brother quilt set for family. I rented time on two long arms in an attempt to answer the ‘long arm question.’ And more on support for a three year oral history project with quiltmakers after the jump!
