If you haven't already, it is time to plant peas! I am preparing to plant my second round of shelling peas for this season. Here is how I grow peas:
I prefer to soak dried seed peas for about twelve hours with a damp paper towel covering them.
I have a planting stick that I created with markings for 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2 and 3 inch increments. Peas like to be planted at one inch below soil level, so I create holes in my prepared garden bed.
Next I use my planting stick to gently push the pre-soaked peas into the premade holes in the soil.
Finally, I add additional soil and gently compact it. Water thoroughly and then wait!

I have long loved the common violet, viola odorata, also known as sweet violet because of its unique and quite sweet fragrance. I love to pick handfuls and place them in small vessels in my home. They last for a week or so in fresh water.. interestingly the flowers and foliage are edible and make lovely additions to salads. Here I am showing them underplanted in my raspberry bramble, where they thrive in early season sun and help suppress weeds later in the season!

Welcome to the "Bramble"! This is what I call my raspberry patch. Each spring, just as the forsythia begin to show color, I know it is time to clean the bramble. I start by pruning out any of the "D's", dead, diseased or deranged canes. Next it is time to trim back all of the healthy canes to between 24" and 30" , this will promote new growth which will produce and abundance of blooms and gorgeous, red raspberries! Stay tuned for updates on the bramble!

If you have leftover ham from your Easter meal, make a quiche!
Several years ago I was asked to create floral arrangements for Julia Child's suite at the Willard Hotel in Washington DC. I was so thrilled to have the opportunity, and to meet the amazing woman in person!
My quiche recipe comes directly from Julia Child herself and is wonderfully simple:

Crack three fresh eggs into a two cup measure and whisk.
Add cream or milk and fill to one and one half cups and whisk again.
Prepare your quiche fillings: I used diced ham, gruyere, broccoli and asparagus
Add your egg mixture into your fillings and season with salt and pepper.
Pour into a prepared crust (I use frozen!) and place on baking sheet.
Bake in 400 degree preheated oven for 20-25 minutes. Let rest before serving!

Oops! I somehow neglected to hit "post" yesterday afternoon! I hope everyone who celebrates had a lovely Easter!

It is the official end of "saffron season" at Stone Mill House. I have harvested the last threads of the saffron crocus, Crocus sativa from my garden. This fall blooming relative of our favorite early spring flower produces long orange stamens, which when dried, become one of the most expensive spices by weight. An expansive planting is recommended for a fruitful harvest.
