STEAK, GRIDDLE CAKES, & COFFEE, 1904. Old West photographer L.A. Huffman was at the Bow & Arrow (a/k/a Bow-Gun) Ranch on South Sunday Creek, north of Miles City, Montana. Lee Warren, with plate and cup atop his boots, was the “broncho buster.” Warren and a few helpers would “tame” six to eight horses per day.

Warren, a short man, tucked his pants into his boots when working. (Click photo to enlarge.) The cowboy to the left had laced boots. The stove at the back of the tent had been unloaded from the chuckwagon. The men were wearing heavy wool California pants, not denim. L.A. Huffman was not a “hold still and face the camera” ideologue. Starting in 1879, he photographed buffalo hunters at work, preserved portraits of Native warriors who fought at the Little Big Horn, and documented the working life of Montana cowboys. “THE PAPOOSE,” 1910, at the Northern Cheyenne Reservation in Eastern Montana. Julia Tuell captured the portrait of a baby and young boy with a steady gaze. Tuell hand-tinted the photograph with watercolors. Tuell spoke the language and taught school at Lame Deer.

Julia Tuell photographed the realities of everyday life on the reservation. She did so at a time when Edward S. Curtis and Rowland W. Reed were creating artistic photographs that paid tribute to the past. Their nostalgic scenes, often with “warriors” wearing ceremonial regalia in heroic poses, seldom provided insights into everyday life. Dan Aadland’s 1996 “Women and Warriors of the Plains” was the book that brought Tuell’s photographs to a larger audience. The ancestors of living Native Americans arrived in North America about 15 thousand years ago. As a result, a wide diversity of communities, societies, and cultures finally developed on the continent over the millennia.
The population figure for Indigenous peoples in the Americas before the 1492 voyage of Christopher Columbus was 70 million or more.
About 562 tribes inhabited the contiguous U.S. territory. Ten largest North American Indian tribes: Arikara, Cherokee, Iroquois, Pawnee, Sioux, Apache, Eskimo, Comanche, Choctaw, Cree, Ojibwa, Mohawk, Cheyenne, Navajo, Seminole, Hope, Shoshone, Mohican, Shawnee, Mi’kmaq, Paiute, Wampanoag, Ho-Chunk, Chumash, Haida.
Below is the tribal map of Pre-European North America.
The old map below gives a Native American perspective by placing the tribes in full flower ~ the “Glory Days.” It is pre-contact from across the eastern sea or, at least, before that contact seriously affected change. Stretching over 400 years, the time of contact was quite different from tribe to tribe. For instance, the “Glory Days” of the Maya and Aztec came to an end very long before the interior tribes of other areas, with some still resisting almost until the 20th Century.
At one time, numbering in the millions, the native peoples spoke close to 4,000 languages.
The Americas’ European conquest, which began in 1492, ended in a sharp drop in the Native American population through epidemics, hostilities, ethnic cleansing, and slavery.
When the United States was founded, established Native American tribes were viewed as semi-independent nations, as they commonly lived in communities separate from white immigrants.

REARING BACK, 1908. Texas photographer Erwin E. Smith was riding this high bucker and was not holding the saddle horn. Posting an image of a photographer on a bucking horse is a first for me! OK, it was a saddle horse rearing back, but still a great capture.

During 1905-12, Erwin Smith photographed the era's most comprehensive documentation of cowboy life. After posting three Smith photos, I thought this image would be a fun conclusion to the series. As always, I hope PC users will click photos to enlarge them. All my posts are public for easy sharing. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
