In Memory of Graham Greene (1952–2025)
Graham Greene was more than an actor.
He was a storyteller, a cultural bridge, and a quiet guardian of Native American identity.
Through his roles, he gave Indigenous characters something Hollywood had long denied them — depth, dignity, and humanity.
He refused stereotypes. He chose truth.
Whether portraying elders, warriors, fathers, or healers, Graham Greene carried Native presence with respect — reminding the world that Indigenous people are not relics of the past, but living cultures with voices, values, and wisdom.
Beyond the screen, he represented pride without anger, strength without noise, and resistance through integrity.
For many Native youth, seeing him meant seeing themselves — not as myths, but as real, resilient people.
His legacy is not only in films and awards.
It lives in every story told honestly,
every culture represented with care,
and every future generation that knows their identity matters.
Thank you, Graham Greene,
for honoring the ancestors,
for protecting the stories,
and for reminding the world that Native voices belong — yesterday, today, and always.

Dignity is not negotiable.
This message reminds us that standing up for your people, your land, and your identity is not an act of rebellion — it is an act of self-respect.
For many Native nations, resistance was never about aggression. It was about survival. It was about refusing to let culture, language, and history be erased. Holding on to who you are became the strongest form of strength.
True resistance often looks quiet: protecting traditions, honoring ancestors, teaching the next generation, and refusing to disappear.
Even today, this spirit lives on wherever communities stand firm for their rights, their voices, and their future. Because dignity doesn’t come from power — it comes from knowing who you are and refusing to surrender it.

Pulling a thousand-year-old canoe out of the water is like pulling a piece of time straight into daylight. A reminder that Native innovation didn’t just survive — it’s still resurfacing.

Perfectly preserved by the lake, the canoe carried stories long before the U.S. existed. Stories of travel, hunting, ceremony, life.

This isn’t just an artifact. It’s proof that our ancestors carved, created, and navigated with mastery. Still here. Still speaking.

Like other Native tribes, the Blackfoot have a number of oral tales that they have passed down from one generation to the next. One of the main figures in many of these Blackfoot legends is Napi, which means "Old Man" in Blackfoot. Napi was the son of Nah-too-si, who was the creator of the world, and was sent to teach the Blackfoot how to live a sinless and better life. Napi was not only revered, but often prayed to. In the legends, he is often teaching lessons through tricks or dangerous acts. Communication between the Blackfoot and the supernatural world often occurred through visions or dreams. A number of ceremonies celebrated and encouraged these visions, such as the Sun Dance.

Walker Calhoun was the youngest of 12 children born to Sally Ann Calhoun and Morgan Calhoun. His father died when he was young.

At the age of 12, Calhoun attended a boarding school in Cherokee, North Carolina, where he was taught the English language. Before that time, he had rarely heard English since his mother did not speak it. During World War II, he was drafted and served as a combat engineer in Germany.

Calhoun started learning Cherokee songs from an early age. He had learned most of the social and sacred songs from his uncle, Will West Long, by the time he was nine years old.

Calhoun founded the Raven Rock Dancers in the 1980s, to help keep traditional Cherokee dances alive within his Big Cove, North Carolina community.

Walker Calhoun was a Cherokee musician, dancer, and teacher. He was known as a medicine man and spiritual leader who worked to preserve the history, religion, and herbal healing methods of his people.

Died: March 28, 2012
(aged 93)
