I’ve met mothers like that. Whenever they saw a beautiful outfit I owned, the first thing they thought of was always: “This would look perfect on my daughter.”

It always reminds me of a Vietnamese saying: “A life without a daughter is a life without tenderness.”

For generations, a dowry was one of the most precious things a mother could leave for her daughter. Maybe that’s why, even today, we still have the chance to see original vintage pieces preserved through generations.

But sometimes, thinking about it feels a little sad. Many of these outfits are only sold after the mothers have passed away, then quietly handed down through children and grandchildren.

Some pieces, to me, are no longer just clothing. They feel like living evidence of history and culture. There are Hmong groups where, today, almost an entire region no longer wears these traditional outfits. Only a few elderly women still keep them, as if they were a bridge connecting them back to their ancestors.

Perhaps because I understand that, I treasure every piece I have. Not only because they are beautiful, but because each one carries a story behind it.

Many from GenZ and GenAlpha may or may not be familiar with the traditional clothing of the Flower Hmong people, a group with subgroups like Hmoob Leeg, Hmoob Puas, Hmoob Sib, and Hmoob Dawb from areas such as Simacai and Bac Ha in Lao Cai.

In the past, life was humble. Infrastructure was simple, and resources scarce. Yet, it was in these conditions that our ancestors created minimalist yet beautiful clothing that spoke to their unique creativity. Every woman, every family, crafted their own distinct garments, ensuring no two were alike. Over time, each village developed its own signature styles. In winter, women gathered by the fire to embroider, learn from one another, and add their personal touch to common patterns, creating a distinct identity for each community, even within the same ethnic group.

Today, with our fast-paced lives filled with worries, few people still have the time or patience to make their own clothes. Instead, we buy mass-produced garments, losing the unique, personal touch that once made every piece a source of pride.

However, the beauty of simplicity is timeless. The more minimalist the design, the more refined and beautiful it becomes. While everyone has their own view of beauty, on special occasions, do you want to be remembered for who you are or just for the outfit you’re wearing?

In the past, Hmong Hoa clothing was made from natural, hand-dyed black and indigo linen or cotton. The embroidery, often in red, white, and golden silk, was rustic yet brilliant. Women would simply wrap a black scarf around their heads, not to showcase accessories, but to highlight their face and keep their hair neat.

Today, our choices have expanded: from colorful woven scarves to embroidered headpieces and vibrant tassel hats. Occasionally, elements from Miao clothing in Guizhou, China, have made their way into Hmong fashion.

Despite these changes, what remains most important is our awareness of where we come from. A little self-respect and pride in the beauty of our heritage-a beauty shaped by simplicity, skill, and a quiet love for the life our ancestors lived, still carries deep meaning today.

This year, I haven’t seen anyone asking to buy batik tools anymore…
Are people still doing this craft?

Business has been tough lately. Maybe I should retire early and go back to my hometown to draw with beeswax instead!
