Dior’s Spring/Summer 1998 Haute Couture collection, designed by John Galliano, was a sumptuous and extravagant visual feast.
Presented at the Palais Garnier in Paris, the collection evoked the opulent soirées and high-society gatherings of the early 20th century. One of its greatest inspirations was Marchesa Luisa Casati Stampa di Soncino, renowned for her eccentric personality and her desire to transform herself into “a living work of art.” She became famous for her shocking appearances, once strolling through the streets accompanied by a pair of leopards and even wearing live snakes as jewellery.
Channeling the Marchesa’s theatrical spirit, Galliano’s collection featured backless velvet gowns adorned with Art Nouveau motifs, sweeping opera coats trimmed with luxurious mink, refined lace dresses and skirt suits, as well as wide-brimmed hats lavishly decorated with roses. The show ended with a shower of confetti cut into delicate butterfly shapes, creating a spellbinding scene that felt like pure magic.
