What Is Amazon Prime Video?
Amazon Prime Video is Amazon’s video streaming service (you may remember it once being called something like “Amazon Prime Instant Video”). All of the more than 150 million Amazon Prime members around the world get access to a library of ad-free on-demand content, including movies, TV series, and a lineup of Prime original series, all included with a standard Prime membership. If you aren’t a Prime member, you can also buy or rent content from Amazon on a pay-per-title basis, or subscribe to the stand-alone Prime Video membership for access to just the streaming service. The platform also has a handful of ad-supported channels that are free to watch, though you’ll have to sit through periodic commercial breaks throughout your show.
Amazon Prime Video is best for:
Users who want to take advantage of other Amazon Prime benefits
Fans of Prime’s award-winning original series
Viewers who want to keep on-demand, purchased, and rented titles all in one place
Amazon Prime Video is not recommended for:
Cord-cutters hoping to tune into sports, local news, and other live TV
Families looking for popular kids’ programming
Users easily confused by complicated interfaces
Amazon Prime Video comes in at No. 2 in our ratings of the Best On-Demand Streaming Services of 2022. This streaming service, which comes included with any Amazon Prime membership but can also be accessed as a standalone subscription, has plenty of advantages. Being bundled with other Prime benefits makes it a great value for its price, and its strong original TV series, which often pop up at awards shows, helps keep fans happy. In addition, if the content you want isn’t available as part of your subscription, you can purchase or rent titles through the platform as well, making it easy to keep everything in the same place.
However, the user interface of the Amazon Prime library can get complicated. Prime Video’s menu screen is crowded, with many titles not included in a subscription. This can get frustrating if you don’t want to pay separately for individual episodes and movies, and if you get your hopes up only to realize that the movie you’re seeing on the home page is one you’ll have to pay extra to see. Amazon now displays a blue Prime tag on movies that are included and a gold dollar sign to help readers identify what’s not included. Unfortunately, the added tags can appear differently on different devices. It’s also hard to navigate between seasons of series, unlike with the convenient watchlists of some competitive streaming services.
One nice element of Amazon Prime Video is that it’s not ad-supported, so you won’t have to sit through commercials during your precious TV time. It’s also easy to integrate other channel subscriptions, so if you want to watch content from HBO, Starz, or other premium channels, you can access those from your Prime menu as well. Amazon does offer a few live events on its platform, but don’t confuse these with live TV streaming. Amazon Live offers mostly sponsored presentations live-streamed on Prime Video.
Overall, Prime Video is a solid pick if you’re looking for award-winning TV and options to keep all your content in one self-contained platform. It’s also great if you’ve already got an Amazon Prime membership since you won’t have to pay any additional cost to stream Prime Video’s included content.
