In April 2002, when actress and R&B singer Brandy decided everything was going to change, she grabbed these Levi’s® 518 cutoffs for her Vibe cover shoot. She’d just turned 23. Her coming-of-age sitcom Moesha had gone off the air a year earlier. Her third studio album, Full Moon, was dropping in April, just after the magazine hit newsstands.

Levi’s® 518 jeans were our take on the superlow, bootcut fit that originated in Brazil. Stars like Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Destiny’s Child lead singer Beyonce Knowles were photographed in our hip-huggers. Brandy wanted to show she wasn’t an innocent girl anymore, but a full-grown woman with agency, s*x appeal and some real pipes.

This was Brandy’s reintroduction. She wanted to make a statement. So she wore Levi’s®.

Behold the world’s oldest Levi’s® jean jacket, an American beauty dating back to the late 1870s—older than the phonograph, the automobile and aspirin. In its time, pieces like this weren’t even called jackets. They were called blouses.

Reinforced with copper rivets and sewn with triple pleats, blouses were worker’s garments, meant to be worn with waist overalls and, later, the original Levi’s® 501® Jean.

That brown stain? Rust. Levi’s® historian Tracey Panek, who acquired this jacket in the early 2000s, believes its owner lived in Nevada or California. The jacket is stored in a fireproof safe in the Archives at our San Francisco headquarters, next to Planet Earth’s oldest pair of blue jeans.
