In Memory of Graham Greene (1952–2025)
Graham Greene was more than an actor.
He was a storyteller, a cultural bridge, and a quiet guardian of Native American identity.
Through his roles, he gave Indigenous characters something Hollywood had long denied them — depth, dignity, and humanity.
He refused stereotypes. He chose truth.
Whether portraying elders, warriors, fathers, or healers, Graham Greene carried Native presence with respect — reminding the world that Indigenous people are not relics of the past, but living cultures with voices, values, and wisdom.
Beyond the screen, he represented pride without anger, strength without noise, and resistance through integrity.
For many Native youth, seeing him meant seeing themselves — not as myths, but as real, resilient people.
His legacy is not only in films and awards.
It lives in every story told honestly,
every culture represented with care,
and every future generation that knows their identity matters.
Thank you, Graham Greene,
for honoring the ancestors,
for protecting the stories,
and for reminding the world that Native voices belong — yesterday, today, and always.

It was a Cheyenne Woman named Buffalo Calf Road Woman who killed George Armstrong Custer with his own saber at the Battle of Little Bighorn on June 25, 1876. Cheyenne women wear silver drops on their belt to this day to honor her as she proudly wore the saber she claimed from him on that prestigious day.

As the Cheyenne story goes:

Buffalo Calf Road Woman approached Custer, grabbed his saber, and stabbed him, eventually killing him. She told the General “he had it coming.” As Custer lay dead on the ground, Cheyenne and Arapaho women used their awls to stab his ears. It is told that the women chanted “we do this to you so that you will listen to our people in the next world.” The women referred to Custer as Attacker at Dawn because of his role in the Wash*ta Massacre of 1868, in which he attacked Black Kettle’s camp and captured 53 women and children. Many women were r***d as their village burned.

The woman who stabbed Custer claimed his saber. In the days and years to follow, she wore it honorably hanging from her leather belt. This woman was highly respected by all for her warrior deed. After her death, many Cheyenne women continue to honor and remember her by wearing a silver drop on their side attached to their leather belts.

The bison, a symbol of strength and resilience, has long been integral to Native American culture. Once nearly driven to extinction, the resurgence of this majestic animal represents not just the survival of a species, but also a testament to the power of conservation efforts.

Bison are more than just an animal; they are a vital part of the ecosystem. Their presence helps maintain grasslands, supporting many other species and keeping the environment in balance.

Let"s honor the bison and all wildlife by committing to preserve their habitats and promote sustainable coexistence. The beauty of nature depends on our collective responsibility to protect it.

Chief Dan George once stopped a rehearsal on The Outlaw Josey Wales, pointed at a line written for him, and said, “If you expect me to speak words that insult my people, I will leave this set right now.”

Clint Eastwood looked up.

The entire cast waited.

The script would change or the scene would die.

George had been hired because studios wanted authenticity, yet those same studios kept handing him dialogue filled with stereotypes. On this film, one scene crossed a line he refused to tolerate. The script described Native characters as simple minded. George pushed the pages aside and told the writers they had confused history with prejudice.

The producers pulled him aside.

They warned him the budget was tight.

They reminded him he was not the lead.

George told them none of that mattered. If the scene remained, they could replace him.

Eastwood asked what the line should have been.

George delivered a version drawn from lived truth rather than Hollywood guesswork.

It was quiet, direct, and grounded in dignity.

Eastwood approved it on the spot.

The producer did not.

George held his ground until the producer gave in.

That moment became the turning point on set.

Cast members began asking George for guidance on how to avoid false portrayals.

Writers stopped sending him dialogue without running it past him first.

Eastwood later said that George’s notes made the film better than anything they had planned.

But the deeper scandal came off set.

During the film’s early promotion, a studio publicist suggested describing George as a “real life relic of the Old West.” The phrase appeared in a draft press release. George saw it and refused to participate in any publicity until the language was removed. He told them he was an actor and a chief, not a museum exhibit.

The publicist apologized.

The studio rewrote the material.

George attended the premiere.

Years later, Indigenous actors revealed that George’s refusal to accept romanticized or degrading portrayals opened doors for them. He had fought battles quietly that others never knew about. One actor said, “He told the truth when everyone preferred the costume.”

Chief Dan George is remembered for gentleness, humor, and the wisdom of his performances.

The real story shows something far sharper.

He corrected Hollywood from the inside,

he forced directors and studios to confront their blind spots,

and he delivered authenticity on sets that expected him to simply play along.

He was not just acting.

He was protecting a truth the industry had ignored for generations.

Stan Rushworth, an indigenous elder of Cherokee descent, imparted a powerful lesson that reshaped the way of thinking about rights and responsibilities. He emphasized the difference between the Western settler mindset of "I have rights" and the indigenous perspective of "I have obligations." In a society that often focuses on individual entitlements, the true purpose lies not in what one is entitled to, but in the responsibilities one carries. Rather than focusing on personal rights, it is essential to recognize the obligation to honor and serve past generations, the present communities, and the generations to come. Most importantly, there is a deep responsibility to the planet itself, whose health sustains all life.
