It’s so lovely to involved with this market again in 2020. Even though we cant physically be in the hills for it, the team have created an awesome online event and website where you can support ethical and sustainable independent businesses this giving season. Take a peek and see what treasures you find. 👀🍃

Is supporting female business owners something you'd like to do?

The United Nations Women describes why many people find this important on their website:
"Investing in women’s economic empowerment sets a direct path towards gender equality, poverty eradication and inclusive economic growth. Women make enormous contributions to economies, whether in businesses, on farms, as entrepreneurs or employees, or by doing unpaid care work at home.
But they also remain disproportionately affected by poverty, discrimination and exploitation. Gender discrimination means women often end up in insecure, low-wage jobs, and constitute a small minority of those in senior positions. It curtails access to economic assets such as land and loans. It limits participation in shaping economic and social policies. And, because women perform the bulk of household work, they often have little time left to pursue economic opportunities." - (UNWomen.org)

Nothing reminds me more of the early days of motherhood than the stretchy, soft and ever so slightly glam element of athleisure. Women are sneered at for wearing luxe spandex they never plan to exercise in, but I think that’s sexist bu****it tbh.
When I was getting dressed today I was hit by the sudden urge to get in the car and go to Highpoint or Northland or any one of the other palatial malls that sit like castles in Melbourne’s suburbs. This is where I spent significant portions of my time after the smöl was born, amidst the bustle of bright lights, people and beautiful, clean shops in which everything was always put away properly and nothing was strewn across the floor or piled up in the sink.
I’d push the pram around or strap him to my chest in the baby carrier, pounding the shiny floors for hours at a time while drinking coffee and trying to feel normal again. Shopping malls are generally not considered to be relaxing environments, but as a new mum they were essential respite for me when the alternative was being in the much more anxiety inducing solitude of the quiet living room at home.
I saw other mums doing the same thing, from the newer to the more seasoned. All of us marching together in our uniforms, that stretchy spandex wrapping itself around our bruised and weeping bodies like a protective casing. Lycra is easy to remove if you need to get to the toilet quickly. It can be the second line of defence against a weakened pelvic floor. And high stretchy waists are good for supporting muscles that have been stretched or even displaced from the physical demands of growing an entire human from scratch inside a pocket that, at its usual size, is no bigger than a pear.
There was something else I thought of too as I pulled these clothes on this morning. A time pre baby and malls and meltdowns and the loss of bodily autonomy. A me that played roller derby and took pride in how my body’s dimensions could be useful to my team, rather than dwelled on insecurities.... see Clem’s post for more ❤️
