TRUI Couture, is a local brand of handmade clothing specializing in crochet garments that are guaranteed to make you stand out from the crowd.
Founded by Bertus Engelbrecht, from Cape Town, his idea of launching a crochet brand came from his personal need for quality, unique, warm and cozy knitware trousers for when his legs were cold. You get so many options of knitware for your upper body, but few for your legs. Why was that?
The only options for your legs were denims (not comfy or soft), or sweatpants (boring!) or mass produced knitted pants with boring colors and designs.
This led him to discover Crochet Pants. (basically a sweater for your legs!). But crochet long pants were not something that were commercially viable for big brands, as it is very labour intensive and there are no machines that can crochet. It can only be hand made.
Crochet came naturally after discovering all the beautiful unique patterns, colors, and designs that you can choose. Bertus and his partner were in love with it, and after seeing how other people also loved these pants, he decided to start a business selling these crochet garments. And thus TRUI (Afrikaans for Wooly Sweater) was born.
Soon after, many more designs followed for both men and women - long pants, shorts, vests, hoody tops, jackets, bralettes and tops, in all different designs, patterns and color combinations!
No longer is TRUI just pants for lazying around the house in Winter time, now its a fashion item that you can wear in the streets, at festivals, at Afrikaburn, at the beach and even for nights out!
Today, TRUI is unique brand of artisan fashion cloting that truly throws away "boring" and welcomes the individuals who wants to make a bold statement and stand out in the crowd.
