'Nature is red in tooth and claw' - Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Details from '108 Names of Lilith'.

I took a lot of inspiration from that quote, the nature of nature :).

How sometimes it seems really brutal but beautifully so! Every creature doing what they need to do- no pretense, no remorse.

I've watched the cutest little mongoose nab a tiny bird and carry him away.
The water bird seems to be eating other birds who pass through the system in a cycle of life.
I've seen a baboon sitting by himself away from the troop, overlooking the sunrise.. Settled in himself and the elements.

Lilith is like this for me. Powerful in her connection to her own nature.

My friend put me on to these incredible ancient things called 'incantation bowls' that were used as a form of protective magic. These were rough clay bowls inscribed on the inside in a jewish
babylonian aramaic written from the inner rim of the bowl and spiralling in to the centre. At the
centre was a naïvely drawn image of a demon. The thought process was that the demon would read
the inscription on the bows from the outside in and get caught in the centre by the words.
The bowl would then be turned upside down trapping the demon like a bug, and buried face down under each corner of the house.

A very common demon appearing at the centre of these bowls was the demon Lilith.
Lilith at that stage was seen as a baby snatcher- tearing unborn babies from their mothers wombs.
Later Lilith crops up in Jewish folklore as being Adam's first wife who left the garden of Eden due
to her refusal to submit to him.

These days Lilith is a powerful symbol of female force, deep connection to Self and necessary rage against unnatural and superficial ways of living.

She is totally and utterly my home girl 🔻 🔺

In this piece I wanted to invoke Lilith, rather than trap her in a bowl. I wanted to bring her out and
praise her in every symbol stitch and sign.
Ive called this '108 names of Lilith' as it recalls the Yogic chanting of 108 names of any given Goddess or God where the different names chanted relate to the different qualities of the Goddess and the chanting of these names invokes the protection and the presence of that deity.

I want these visual symbols of Lilith to awaken her fierce qualities of independence,connection to
Self, and the courage to follow ones own inherent truth within all of us. I believe we need that now
more than anything.

White Cloud Vol 3

The landscape here is kept in neutral calico, as if it's a place I'll be visiting in the future, I can sense it and I know where I want to be but am not yet certain of where it is. Single animals following their own nature and my own symbols dedicated to an inner journey combine to give encouragement to the process of following intangible whims.

I was thinking about projections on this one. How confusing it is to be among people sometimes. How boundaries get lost. How thoughts get influenced.

Love the lyrics of the song that goes with this post 'when I'm alone the world falls back into place'

I need this often, to go off alone to get my head straight and figure out what's what so next time I'm face to face with another being i can hold my own and know my way.

White Cloud (part 1)

When there was a clear blue sky with only one visible cloud in it, my mom used to tell me that that was her Spiritual Guide and his name was 'White Cloud'. I tried for a bit to find and name my own guide, but somehow the poetry of his name and how you knew he was there has stuck with me all this time.

It lead me to think of guides and being misguided and how in many varied instances we lose ourselves to the influence of another,whether that be a  person,  society, a particular dogma or a belief. 

When I think of 'White Cloud' I think of the clarity of one singular cloud in the sky- no other distractions. White Cloud ,although outer, is a representation to me of Inner Guidance. I have dedicated this series to the appreciation of Inner Guidance and to the entreaty that it come back online within all of us so that we follow our own prompts,are quiet enough to hear our own instincts and live according to our own nature.
