TROUBLESHOOTING Part 3: Stains caused by medications.

Can you keep using cloth nappies whilst your little one is on medication? Yes - almost always. With the exception of certain very strong medications such as those used for chemotherapy, you can keep on using your nappies as per usual.

You might want to mentally prepare for some staining though. This typically occurs when you give paracetamol based medications which include sorbitol as an ingredient. Sorbitol occurs naturally in some fruits such as apricots, but is used in much larger amounts to try to make the medication taste sweeter and more palatable.

For some reason, not all kiddies will experience sorbitol staining and even those who do might not experience it every time.

There isn’t a whole lot you can do to prevent these greyish brown marks because the stain is carried by the wee and will not be stopped by a fleece liner. The good news is that these stains tend to fade after several washes anyway and if they really bother you, you can use some of the stain removal techniques we mentioned in yesterday’s post.

TROUBLESHOOTING Part 2: Stains during the Newborn Phase

Firstly, let me start by saying that stains don’t really matter. As long as the nappy is thoroughly cleaned and laundered, it is okay for there to be some pigment left on the fibres of the fabric.

They’re frustrating to look at though, right? Especially in the newborn phase when your nappies might be fresh and new and so very pretty and newborn p**p is such a bright and stain-producing substance.

Here’s how to reduce and tackle stains (if you want to) during the newborn phase:

You can use a fleece liner. Newborn p**p is so that it might go through the liner, but at least it offers an added layer of protection. Synthetic fleece holds on to the pigment much less than natural cotton or bamboo. They also provide a stay dry effect for Baby and you’ll probably want to start using them once Baby is on solid foods, so you might as well start now.

Rinse the nappies off and then rub any marks with boerseep or Sunlight green bar soap. (PS, all our orders are currently being sent out with a free mini bar of tallow-based boerseep made by Pure Apothecary. If you’re keen to try it, now is the perfect time to shop with us.)

Dry your nappies in the sunshine. Sunlight works wonders to bleach out the pigment left behind by that pesky newborn p**p. We recommend that you leave your cotton Squiggles & Squash nappies in the sun when you’re home and can bring them into shade after a couple of hours as overdrying can cause them to become slightly stiff. If this happens, just rub and scrumple them in your hands to soften them again.

If have a stubborn newborn p**p stain and really would like for it to disappear (for example, because you are selling your newborn stash and moving into OSFM) you can use a very diluted solution of chlorine bleach (Jik) or oxygen bleach (Bio-bubbles, Oxiclean, Vanish powder etc) on your cotton Squiggles & Squash nappies for a short period of time. Follow the usage instructions accurately and avoid doing this frequently. Thankfully our cotton fleece fabric is hardy and can withstand this stain treatment well with no colour bleaching or damage if it is done correctly.

TROUBLESHOOTING Part 1: Naysayers & the Mental Adjustment

This might be an unusual topic to start off with for our troubleshooting series, but it's so often the first hurdle. People will always have something to say about your parenting decisions, and knowing the ‘why’s behind your decisions gives you the confidence to keep going despite this. It’s the same with cloth nappies.

Receiving negative comments about the ecision to use cloth nappies is frustrating at best and at worst, it could completely derail someone’s cloth journey before it even begins.

Whether you engage with these people and explain your choice is of course totally up to you, and will probably differ depending on who you’re chatting to. What’s crucial is that you don’t let their words affect your confidence.

Here are a few of our favourite mantras and sentiments to keep you going strong:
“Cloth nappies are healthier for my baby and there is research to prove this.”
“I am making the best choice for the environment. No matter what anyone thinks, data and research shows that this is true.”
“I have done the maths, and choosing cloth can save me a large amount of money even though the initial investment is greater.”
“I know I can take on the few extra chores even when others doubt my ability to.”
“Cloth nappies have been used for a very long time, and it is only getting more and more convenient. I can manage.”
“Billions of adults grew up in cloth nappies. Even if my baby sits or crawls or walks later than another baby, I will not doubt that I have made a wise decision and I know that I have not stunted their development in any way.”
“We don’t need to use cloth 100% of the time to have used it successfully. In the same way we might occasionally use paper plates when baby arrives or when we travel without doubting our ability to use crockery 90% of the time, I know we can find our feet and have a wonderful cloth nappy journey.”

Did you receive any negative comments? Did they get into your headspace? What kept or keeps you going?

Have you noticed that your nappies aren’t lasting quite as long between changes any more?

This is a common phenomenon at this time of year because as the days (and nights) get cooler, our little ones tend to sweat less and thus wee more.

What to do? It’s no problem, you just need to add another booster or two to make up the difference in absorbency. And as they say, forewarned is forearmed, so here’s your head’s up that if you live in Cape Town you can (apparently) expect it to be a wetter and chillier day tomorrow.
