It took me (Deidre) a while to get to write this post. SO WON WOMEN OF THE YEAR AWARD. What that meant for me as a sister is that I got to see someone like me, with my skin tone, with my accent, from my lineage walk into a room and leave her mark in the room. It is imperative that we celebrate women of colour making moves within their sector. Something that we often overlook is the defiant power with which we are born. The kind of strength that pulls itself up by the boot straps after losing your mother in the same month as you having to do your final interviews, the same power that carries you when all you want to do is lie down and cry. This win is not just for her, but for us the collective of women silently pushing through our struggles. We have the ability to really forge a path that is unique to our people and that shows our children that regardless of who you are or where you come from: YOU ARE MORE THAN CAPABLE TO CHANGE THE NARRATIVE. It is also a soft reminder that where we come from and who we are matters. Del you are a sister like no other and a reminder to generations to come that “we are the hope of the cape flats and the dream of the slave” Halala sister Halala tot laat toe Meide! nou soe!
