✨ WHAT GOES INTO MAKING A CUSTOM DANCE COSTUME? ✨
Ever wondered why a custom dance costume costs what it does? 💎
When you see a finished costume, you see the beautiful end result. But what you don’t see is all the work that happens behind the scenes, long before the costume is ready to wear.
✂️ DESIGN RESEARCH & QUOTING
Finding inspiration, suggesting designs, researching options and preparing quotes takes time, especially when several designs are being considered.
🧵 SOURCING FABRICS
Finding the right Lycra, mesh and matching colours is not always easy. Many inspiration pictures feature fabrics that are not available in South Africa. Sometimes I have to search multiple suppliers, consider alternatives or have fabric couriered from far away. These are real challenges, and sometimes I even absorb courier costs that I cannot recover.
📐 INDIVIDUAL PATTERN MAKING
I create patterns specifically for each dancer and costume. I don’t simply use generic patterns. Every dancer and design has different requirements.
✂️ CUTTING & SEWING
Every piece must be carefully cut and assembled. I do all the sewing myself — I don’t have a seamstress. Every seam, panel, sleeve, skirt and finishing detail requires time and skill.
💎 STONING
Rhinestones are placed individually, often by the hundreds or thousands. Detailed designs can take many hours of patience, concentration and precise work.
📦 FITTINGS & COLLECTION
The work continues with fittings, customer communication, preparing the costume and arranging collection or delivery.
A picture of a costume shows you what it looks like — it doesn’t show you the hours of work required to create it.
Every design is different. A simple costume cannot be priced the same as a complex, heavily stoned competition costume.
When you order a custom costume, you are paying for more than fabric and rhinestones. You are paying for creativity, experience, skill, time and handmade craftsmanship. ❤️
I love creating costumes for dancers, and I take pride in the work I do. I simply want customers to understand the process and appreciate the work that goes into every finished piece.
Thank you to everyone who values and supports handmade work and small businesses. ✨
