Retrofontein Apparel

Retrofontein Apparel An afrocentric urban streetwear label. Retrofontein is an urban streetwear brand that is co-founded and run by Kabelo “Tsokbase” Tsoka and Sizwe ‘Zeez’ Zulu.

We are influenced by afrocentric prints and patterns from various cultures and tribes in and around Africa. We aim to reflect “Africanness” in our designs as well as our name which will be further explained below. The name Retrofontein has 3 parts to it. Firstly the “Retro” part comes from retrospective. We used this word because it reflects what we do, we look back into time to see the developmen

t in fashion though the times. We are greatly inspired by the retro and vintage feel of the 80′s and 90′s fashion, style and trends. The latter “Fontein” part is an Afrikaans suffix or phrase which means dorpie (town). This word, coming from a South African language,
further emphasises our staying true to our African roots. “Ons is ‘n nuwe dorpie”

Lastly, the second meaning for the “Fontein” part of the name means fountain in Dutch
(related to Afrikaans). We see Retrofontein as a fountain of creativity inspired by the retro and
vintage style and trends of the 80′s and 90′s. So herein comes the meaning, “The
Retrospective Fountain.”
