Wrapt Knitwear X Guillotine by Lisa Jaffe
Lisa Jaffe and I have long had a little mutual fan club. We both love clean, timeless design, value material integrity, and are intrigued by how softness and structure can co-exist and complement each other.
After a few years of saying "we should do something together", we did 😀 - and it's dropping right now, in-store at Guillotine.
Each item was hand-picked by us, and subtly tweaked in a process we think of as a dialogue in form, structure and fibre.
Two styles are in-store: the Halo Pullover, a delicious mohair jumper, and the Halo Jacket, a softly tailored jacket, also in mohair. We'll let you know about new items as they drop.

What do you think? We'd love to hear from you! 🥰

My mom made most of our clothes when we were growing up, with the result that I've always been very aware of - and fussy about - what garments are made of, and what they should look like on the inside. It's a compulsion: when I see something in a store that looks interesting, it gets turned inside out so I can check both of those things. If either is a "fail", that's the end of my interest. ☺️
So natural fibres, obviously... But also, in every single thing we make, I'm aware of what the "wrong" side looks like - and whether my mom would approve.
So I guess it stands to reason that I'm terribly pleased with this reversible set, which literally doesn't have a wrong side!
This is achieved by, firstly, using a rather special knitting technique that layers one colour yarn inside the other, so that the lighter one dominates from one side and the darker one from the other.
Secondly, a whole lot of trial and error produced trims that look equally lovely inside and out.
And lastly, some very meticulous hand assembly ensures that even the seams (where pieces are joined) are not only functional, but decorative.
Want to know what my mom's reaction when I showed her? "My kind!" 💚💚💚🥰

The Tessera Set, in 100% cotton, is available on the website (link in bio). Please check timelines before ordering: we'll be knitting til the 15th, and only have capacity for a few more orders before the holidays.

This jumper was custom knitted for a longtime colleague (in my previous life) and friend, Mmabatho Kau.
She provided the colour scheme - and doesn't she look sensational in the end result? 😍🥰🤩🤩🤩🥳🥳🥳

The Swartberg Coat is the most direct translation of inspiration into knit in Strata, our current range of knits.
Based on a picture I took while we were driving through the spectacular Swartberg Pass, it attempts to capture the line of the landscape, and wrap it around into a garment. Ever fancied being hugged by a mountain? 😀
After some painstaking planning and plotting the coat was knitted in Karoo mohair on a manual domestic knitting machine. Hand stitching adds depth and texture and evokes - in a very simplified and stylised way - the layers that make up the landscape.
Fittingly, the Swartberg Coat is on its way to the Karoo Winter Wool Festival, to be shown alongside the work of many of my natural fiber loving colleagues.

About the collection: STRATA (AW25) is inspired by the way rock records its own formation over time, in layers, folds and shapes. Knitting, in a way, does the same: in its shape, texture and structure, it records both time and process as it is made.
In Strata we let the process show: shaping marks, exposed seams, textured surfaces, layered shapes.
Each piece has the quiet strength for years of wear. No fuss, just purpose and beauty.

Hope you can stay snug this weekend!
is wearing the SHEAR Mohair Coat - our first ever coat! 😀 The prominent ribs are inspired by the strata in landscapes. They create a slightly 3D effect that helps with insulation, and also hold the coat's structure.

In 2023 I was asked by performance artist Nelisiwe Xaba to knit a large prop / costume for use in "vRot", a piece commissioned by VIAD. What started out as a fairly simple project kept growing, and ended up being a very fun and stimulating collaborative process. The performance was about corruption and decay in society, and we took visual cues from actual pieces of molding fruit and bread that Neli was experimenting with - both gross and weirdly, compellingly beautiful.
We spent days and days together working on this elaborate tissue, stitching and beading - so much so that I felt a bit bereft when the first performance approached and I had to let it go! 😀
Last week I saw it for the first time since then, and could admire the additional adornments that Neli has applied. I gave it some TLC, and now it's heading for the Karoo Winter Wool Festival where it will be on display.

This warm and roomy mohair jumper, TILT, hangs with unexpected lightness—cropped at the front, dropped at the back.
Sleeves graze the hands or cuff back with both structure and ease. Durable, yet soft; sculptural, yet exquisitely warm.

HALO - Mohair Cardigan
Softly structured, elegantly minimal.
Halo fits like a jacket but wears like the cosiest of knits.
Its shawl collar gently holds and warms the neck, falling open to frame the face and soften the silhouette.
Knitted in Karoo mohair—light, warm, and quietly radiant. Called Halo for the aura of warmth and well-being it imparts, and for the elevating effect it has on any outfit.

The name of our new collection, Strata, refers to layers, and that idea played a big part in the design process.
Of all the pieces, the Caldera Set (jumper and skirt) probably has the most layers to it, both literally and metaphorically - and today's story is about one of those.
You know how I often talk about "Karoo mohair"? Until recently attaching the same kind of specificity to merino wool was not possible. (The reasons for this are many and complex, and not for today.)
For this set, though, I used Namaqua wool, perfectly traceable, 100% local. It was grown (on merino sheep!), shorn, washed, carded, spun and dyed by , and the end result is beautiful, fine and soft, lovely to work with and to wear.
It makes up 30% of these garments, with the rest being SA cotton - more about these layers another day.
