A First for the Northern Cape: Private Fashion Design Academy Launches in Kimberley
Kimberley is set to welcome a groundbreaking creative initiative with the launch of a new Fashion Design Academy, the first of its kind in the Northern Cape. The academy is established to provide accessible, high-quality fashion education while nurturing creativity, entrepreneurship, and practical skills development within the region.
The academy offers a two-year Fashion Design Programme, designed for aspiring designers, creatives, and individuals passionate about fashion, textiles, and garment construction. No previous sewing or fashion experience is required, making the programme inclusive and accessible to a wide range of students.
Students will receive training in both creative and technical disciplines, including garment construction, pattern drafting, fashion theory, textiles, product development, and professional industry practices. The programme places strong emphasis on hands-on, practical learning, ensuring graduates are equipped with industry-relevant skills for employment, further study, or starting their own fashion-related businesses.
Its mission is to contribute meaningfully to local skills development, job creation, and the growth of the Northern Cape’s creative economy through education and empowerment.
Classes follow the school term calendar and run Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 13:30, offering a structured yet manageable learning environment. Registration includes essential tools such as a sewing machine, pattern drafting instruments, textbooks, and a starter sewing kit.
The academy operates as a private institution trading under an established non-profit organisation, and is committed to long-term community impact through creative education and skills transfer.
Registrations are now open, with the first intake commencing on 2 February 2026.
