SARI for Change

SARI for Change Conscious brand empowering women from the maker to the wearer through upcycling the vintage sari~ Welcome to the sacred economy.

The main core of our business is upcycling the Indian Sari to create one of a kind garments. With 85% of textiles thrown away in landfills; we found the sari to be an excellent resource as it is 6 metres of reusable fabric that could make seasonal garments with many functions and wears. All the sari is used in either garment or packaging creation and now newly introduced - home deco. At SFC it's a

bout using the resources we have around us to create products of evolving cultures & identities. Part of building our sacred economy we identified the need to teach a skill to unemployed women. We train from scratch, teaching clothing production, home industry and business skills. This allows for a greater earning potential as we shift these women from trainees to employees to suppliers running their own businesses. Not only are we solving a huge South African issue of unemployment but we also promote for our trainees to work in their own spaces in their townships so to reduce travel costs, early mornings and supervision of their children. We've found that this assists with better role modelling in communities whilst developing an entrepreneurial culture within our allocated training hubs. Often we see how the children assist their moms in product making, arousing a new curiosity and skill for them too. The seeds they plant today are definitely nurtured in familiar spaces to our trainees. We acknowledge that creating and seeding a mindset for entrepreneurs in the township takes time. At the onset our training is around cultivating this mind for self motivation and self accountability.
