My journey with Endometriosis started 5 years ago, at age 40 I woke up with severe lower back pain, and could not get out of bed. It was something different from the pain I was used to due to the fact that I am known with PCOS and ovarian cysts was a common denominator .
I would say due to lack of knowledge and misdiagnosis I most probably walked around with the pain for 2 years leading up to my 40th birthday. Every time the pain would be so excruciating but there was never a reason for my pain. It was more a thing if you're known with PCOS and it's a complication of thereof.
A lovely dr saw me at my local hospital , did a scan and referred me back to the Tertiary hospital where I've been a patient for years. The diagnosis was, Endometriosis and a Frozen Pelvis. She explained why the pain was so bad, she said with the Laparoscopic procedure due to be done at the hospital by the specialist, stage of Endometriosis and treatment plan will be worked out.
After the laparoscopic procedure I was told it's stage 4 Endometriosis and the frozen Pelvis is due to adhesions from previous surgical procedures and the endometrial growths outside my uterus . Frozen Pelvis is where the adhesions caused my organs to get stuck together due to the adhesions. Explaining the right flank pain, kissing ovaries and lower back pain to name a few.
My treatment started, which at age 40 caused me to go through Menopause. I felt so old and had memory loss, joint pain and the oh so famous Menapause.
During countless visits to hospital and overhearing conversations amongst ladies I realised that we don't know much about this awful disease. The chronic pain, the brain fog, the joint pain, what is this thing. There is one Yellow poster on the wall. One poster giving us info on Endometriosis.
My gynecologist suggested I join a support Group, this was so amazing. People understanding what you're going through, not saying lame things and making stupid jokes about infertility.
I felt I had to educate myself and my family 1st. We had a fashion show last year where we raised awareness and asked our guests to wear a touch of yellow. Yellow being the colour of Endo awareness
