Rising Designer Seeks Support to Take Rastafari Fashion to New York
South African fashion designer Nina Vanhu Ma is on a mission to take her brand, BlaqMary, to the global stage as she prepares for a potential showcase at New York Fashion Week this September.
Through a recently launched donation campaign, the emerging creative is calling on the public to help fund her journeyβan opportunity that could mark a major milestone not only for her brand, but for Rastafari fashion representation abroad.
The campaign, titled βNYFW Donation,β highlights both the ambition and grassroots nature of her journey. With a target of R7,000 set ahead of the 30th of August deadline, supporters are encouraged to contribute as little as R10 toward making the dream a reality.
BlaqMary is more than just a fashion labelβit is a reflection of identity, culture, and sustainability. Positioned within the growing movement of Rastafari designers redefining global fashion, the brand embraces eco-conscious design while showcasing bold, culturally inspired aesthetics. Across the continent, similar brands have gained international traction by blending heritage with modern storytelling, demonstrating the global appetite for African creativity.
For Nina Vanhu Ma, this opportunity represents more than a runway appearance. It is a chance to amplify the Rastafari narratives through fashion, create international exposure, and open doors for future collaborations and market expansion.
The campaign also reflects the communal spirit often associated with creative journeys. Echoing the African proverb, βIt takes a village to raise a child,β the initiative invites collective participation in building a dream that extends beyond one individual.
As the countdown to the deadline continues, the success of this campaign could see BlaqMary step onto one of the worldβs most prestigious fashion platformsβcarrying with it not just garments, but the story of African resilience, creativity, and unity.
