It’s a misquote of Proverbs 13:24 which states “whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.”
In Psalms 23, the rod and staff are considered comforting. Discipline is not punishment—it’s protection. Like a shepherd’s rod, correction guides us away from danger and toward safety. The heart of Proverbs 23:13-14 isn’t the rod—it’s loving discipline.
God calls parents to guide, correct, and teach—not to punish in anger. Discipline shapes the heart. It teaches us to turn from sinful, harmful actions, and find true fulfillment in Christ.
So, when it comes to discipline, lead with love. Seek gentle correction first. Keep calm, and let every action reflect Christ’s care.
