The BEAR Rally & Motorcycle Expo takes place from 19 to 21 February 2016 at the show grounds in Swellendam, Western Cape. In addition to the Rally event, with live music, a bar, concours, movies and other entertainment, the event will provide a unique pla

tform for dealers to showcase the motorcycles, accessories, clothing, equipment, after-market products, travel and touring opportunities, as well as the unique lifestyle and the appreciation of the environment, that motorcycling offers to a specific, targeted and niche market of motorcyclists – that’s you! BACKGROUND
The Organisers are launching this, the inaugural BEAR Rally, as an annual event, to celebrate the history and development of motorcycles in the ‘West’. BEAR was first formed by the late great John Britten and friends in Christchurch, New Zealand in the early 1980's. This group of enthusiastic motorcycle riders did not fit the social or racing classes available at the time, on their Triumphs, Norton’s & BSA's. The BEAR movement grew rapidly, appealing to all Non-Japanese motorcycle riders. Nowadays the BEAR group offers a much broader range of motorcycles, with expensive Italian makes such as Ducati, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, MV Agusta as well as the other mainstream brands KTM, BMW and the classic Harley Davidson. We believe that there is a strong interest in these brands in the Western Cape, including a massive resurgence of motorcyclists choosing off-road and touring bikes to ride because of the adventure lifestyle. On Wednesday 22 April 2020, we had to sadly bid farewell to one of the stalwarts of the Italian Motorcycle Owners Club - IMOC and a willing and avid supporter of the and . Simon Oakes is well known in the Cape Town motorcycling fraternity for his excellent taste in Italian motorcycles (especially Ducatis), friends, and wine. He will be greatly missed. The team would like to offer our heartfelt and sincere condolences to Maureen and Matthew, all his family and friends, colleagues and everyone whose lives Simon touched. His acerbic wit, good humour, astute observations and excellent conversation will be remembered... Our curry outings to Maharajah will never be the same...

UPDATE: The link to comment on the draft by-law has been changed. Here is the correct link to comment. http://www.capetown.gov.za/City-Connect/Have-your-say/Issues-open-for-public-comment/draft-traffic-by-law?fbclid=IwAR1dAxVbhjbaJ-xit9EURrKXOswcNH6VZ3MGiAhxYj4xI0BXRLHUSDdZCyk

This is an urgent call to all motorcycle commuters, motorcycle related businesses, motorcycle enthusiasts – actually all motorcyclists/bikers.
The City of Cape Town is proposing changes to its Traffic By-Laws. There are many changes proposed but the one of most concern to us is Section 49 (6) (a) of the Draft Traffic By-Law that states that lane sharing by a motorcycle and another vehicle will no longer be permissible.
We believe that this section of the proposal is extremely ill-advised! Bear in mind that Cape Town is the most heavily congested city in the country. Making motorcycles drive like a car in congested traffic situations makes no sense at all – it will just add to the problem!
Studies prove that motorcycle use reduces congestion (and emissions) in cities! Motorcycles and scooters are a cost effective transport solution, and for many citizens are their primary means of transport. They also require less parking space. This is not rocket science.
For many motorcycle dealers in Cape Town, the largest part of their customer base are the commuters. But how many motorcycle commuters will be left if they have to ride their bike like a car. If the dealers start disappearing, what will happen to the already stressed motorcycle market? Motorcycles will end up as no more than toys for the wealthy few…
What about the Capetonians that make a living from motorcycles? What will they do when dealers start disappearing?
Current thinking in Europe is that more should be done to ENCOURAGE the use of motorcycles and scooters.
Please also remember that being rear-ended in a bumper to bumper traffic situation is a fairly common occurrence, but on a motorcycle this could be life threatening.
City of Cape Town this is a BAD idea!
Please people, take the time to log your comments on this proposal before 30 October 2019. Please do make specific reference to Section 49 (6) (a)

49.
