It took me around 70 hours to make this dress, excluding the fitting times.
I would have loved to record or documented the process of making this dress and also some of the other dresses. I started recording some of the work(the pattern making & cutting) in the beginning but by the time I got to the sewing part, it got so much time consuming to move the camera and find angles to record and with the bad lighting due to loadshedding I just stopped. But in the future I would really love to do more videos on how the dresses get made. Just to give a slight insight on what really goes into the making process(which is not that glamorous).
Like with this dress, the most difficult part was the pattern drafting. The measurements and pattern for this dress had to be so accurate so that there’s no need for or very little alterations, because any alterations on something like this will set you back with a lot of time. Everything about this dress is asymmetrical with curved skin illusion cut-out sections that makes is very difficult to sew the parts/panels together. The dress got layers of sequin and glass beaded tulle, meaning that all those little beads along all the seamlines must be removed by hand first before sewing or feeding through the sewing machine. And than when finished stitching or sewing, the tiny loose beading around the seamlines must be reinforced again by hand so that the beads does not fray further or fall off. And than there is the construction and fringes part, which I am not going to go into otherwise this post will never end.
So I spent a lot of time on drafting and manipulating the pattern to illuminate any possible errors, understanding the body type I was working with and consider the type of fabrics I am going to work with and still stay within the budget.
I know I said alot😁 But I just wanted to give some insight on how things get done or made because there is a lot of people that think that it takes an hour to make a dress😉
