FORWARD WITH UNITY

President Hakainde Hichilema said Zambia faced a defining electoral choice between continuing national recovery or returning to economic decline as he prepared to file his presidential nomination papers.

In a national message ahead of his nomination at Mulungushi International Conference Centre, Hichilema said his administration inherited an empty treasury, struggling schools, silent mines and weakened institutions in 2021, but had since restored economic stability, expanded free education, increased Constituency Development Fund allocations and recruited thousands of health workers.

He called for peaceful campaigns and national unity during the election period.

LUSAKA CITY COUNCIL COMPLETES MINI CIVIC CENTRE IN LUSAKA CENTRAL CONSTITUENCY

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) is pleased to announce the successful completion of construction works on the Lusaka Central Constituency Mini Civic Centre.

The project, which is set to be commissioned soon, was funded by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development at a total cost of K3,379,027.91.

The Lusaka Central Mini Civic Centre is among four Mini Civic Centres completed across the city, alongside the Kabwata, Kanyama and Matero Mini Civic Centres.

The establishment of these facilities is part of efforts to decentralise local authority operations and bring key municipal services closer to the people. The centres are expected to improve service delivery, reduce congestion and operational pressure at the main Civic Centre, and enhance efficiency in the provision of public services.

The initiative is in line with Government’s fiscal decentralisation policy, which focuses on delivering community-driven infrastructure that responds directly to the needs of residents.

Lusaka City Council remains committed to providing accessible, efficient and responsive public services through continued infrastructure development.

The official commissioning date for the Lusaka Central Mini Civic Centre will be announced in due course.

‘ARREST THEM!’

President Hakainde Hichilema has ordered swift action against perpetrators of electoral violence following disturbances during nomination filings.

The Head of State said individuals attempting to block lawful filing of nominations were violating the rule of law and warned that Government would act firmly against political violence and disorder.

Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana also warned that anybody engaging in violence would face the full force of the law without protection from political parties or Government.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MEDIA STATEMENT BY GARY NKOMBO
INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE – MAZABUKA CENTRAL CONSTITUENCY

20 May 2026

I wish to strongly condemn the acts of violence and intimidation that I was subjected to today while filing my nomination papers as an independent candidate for the Mazabuka Central Constituency.

What should have been a peaceful and democratic process was unfortunately marred by acts of aggression from individuals determined to undermine the constitutional rights of citizens to freely participate in the democratic process. Such conduct has no place in our democracy and threatens the peace and unity that the people of Mazabuka and Zambia at large deserve.

I wish to call upon all political players, supporters, and stakeholders to exercise restraint, uphold the rule of law, and respect democratic freedoms regardless of political affiliation. Elections must never become a source of violence, fear, or division among our people.

I further call upon the Zambia Police Service to act professionally, impartially, and decisively in investigating this matter and ensuring that all perpetrators are brought to book. The people of Mazabuka Central deserve assurance that law and order will prevail and that every candidate can campaign freely and safely without intimidation.

As an independent candidate, I remain committed to peaceful engagement, issue-based politics, and serving the interests of the people of Mazabuka Central with dignity, integrity, and respect for democratic values.

I urge my supporters to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding during this period.

May peace, justice, and democracy prevail.
