OWN A WARDROBE WITH ONE SUIT

Building a smart wardrobe is one of the most important investments a man can make. The compound benefits over time are truly immeasurable and largely intangible. But like any smart investment out there, building a smart wardrobe should involve research, planning, and efficient ex*****on. What we mean is that you just can't build it overnight, it must be worked upon meticulously.

Now, is everything you need, for every occasion, in your closet possible? Certainly not! You will never have everything, but (and we say that with some emphasis) it is definitely possible to have a well-equipped wardrobe, even if you only have one suit.

This basic, one suit, wardrobe is capable of getting you through most days, in and out of work and through the weekend. Allow us to say that we’re not claiming to guide you through the end-all be-all of wardrobes. However, with that one suit in your arsenal, you won’t be left wondering what to wear tomorrow, even as you plan to restock your suits. Not to mention that it will give you a great place to start from to build your personal style.

So, you have only one suit and are kind of low on cash to get yourself another one? No, problemo. Here's a short list of things you can do about it;

(1) Be Daring: it has often been said that it does not matter the kind of clothes you have, what matters is how you wear them. That one suit can be worn smart one day, the next relaxed smart and the next smart casual and so on and forth.

(2) Learn about Matching Colours: Confidence is everything but it is more gentlemanly when you are doing the correct thing. Got a black suit? Learn the kind of dress shirts it goes with...

(3) Clean Your Shoes: Psychologist say that one of the first things people notice about you is your shoes. Clean your footwear, if it is white, let it sparkle. If it is a black dress leather shoe, let it shine.

CORPORATE STYLE TIP FOR THE WINTER

The cold season of the year is once again upon us. We know you have to keep warm and we insist that you do just that. But while you are at it here is your tip on how to remain classic while keeping warm.

So, now, let's say you're the corporate gent; what do you wear?

Well, let's start with a basic white t-shirt (or any plain light colour) or undershirt as your base layer. Then, you can wear a dress shirt or smart shirt as we commonly know it on top of that undershirt as your second base layer.

Then, you can wear a sweater, cardigan or vest. Whatever you choose, it should fit snugly over your other layers and tie, but should not look like it’s cutting off your circulation. In other words, let it show your neck tie up to below your collarbone. If you go for a sweater or cardigan, make sure it’s light-weight, rather than a bulky knit.

Then at last, you can wear a jacket that is perfectly complemented by your sweater and tie, and a coat for when you go outside.

So to sum up a basic formal winter outfit from bottom layer to top:
1. T-shirt or undershirt (base layer)
2. Dress shirt (base layer)
3. Sweater, cardigan or vest (middle layer)
4. Suit jacket (top layer)
5. Coat (top layer)

Now based on our Zambian climate, you may not need to wear all these layers all the time. However, you need to adapt to your own circumstances. So if you find yourself breaking out in sweat despite the cold temperature, you’re probably wearing a layer or two too many.

Today we conclude our series on grooming tips for young men by saying that do not fall prey to the whimsical whims of fashion.

Because, let's face it, mainstream fashion trends change too fast to really become staples of your style. And as a young man you can’t afford a complete wardrobe overhaul every month. Don't you sometimes just find yourself with a wardrobe full of clothes you don't even wear? So, now, avoid anything that doesn’t survive past an “in” season (like skinny ties and jeans).

Stick to timeless clothing pieces and classic colors , patterns, textures, and combinations (those which have existed since your parents’ and grandparents’ younger years) – since those will never disappoint.

GROOMING TIPS FOR YOUNG MEN

PART SIX: CHOOSE QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Let's face it you are young and are pretty much on a tight budget most of the time. What good is a wardrobe that’s oversaturated with items that either (A) don’t feel good to wear or (B) are difficult to match with one another?

The truth is that it’s pretty much a dump – where the good stuff gets lost in the mix while the rest have to be cleared or replaced. Well, we believe this is one of those mistakes you’ll be glad you made, you're still young. Because it gives you the wisdom to make better purchases (even beyond clothing) at an early age.

But also – you should aim to build your own interchangeable wardrobe which includes:

(i) A good core of white and blue dress shirts (the backbone of most sharp outfits)

(ii)Simple ties with dark shades of blue, green or red (a small repeating pattern is fine)

(iii)Jackets, trousers, shoes with the right colors and textures (which don’t clash with your shirts)

Following this system you can buy a single suit and still turn up like you own a wardrobe full of suits. Also, it provides a set of all clothes you’ll need 99% of the time – and every single piece is something you’ll enjoy wearing.

PART FIVE: OWN A WELL-FITTED SUIT

Let's face it, no matter what your job is, you’ll most likely be required to wear a suit at some point in your life. Here at Corporate Gents we say that if you are going to have one make it a high quality one!

So, now, if you’re going to buy one, make sure it’s a classic suit. Anything less is a bad excuse. Therefore, consider factors like notch lapels, the proper length of the jacket (the back side shouldn’t completely cover your butt) and a clean, consistent stitching (check this by opening the vents and breast pocket).

Remember we also discussed that you need to nail the fit at any point. So, for any suit that’s off the rack – do take the time to have it adjusted. Our advice is that you find a tailor you can trust to do this for you. Skilled tailors would know how to make small changes that take it from “mediocre” to “perfect for you.” They could even turn a twenty-dollar suit from the city market streets into a staple of your dress wardrobe. That’s right – it doesn’t matter where the suit comes from. As long as it looks amazing on you!

Note: Be careful in picking the color of your suit. You wouldn’t wear something bright or flashy to a funeral or corporate event. Make the best choice based on the relevant occasion and your shoe color .

At home, you might still enjoy wearing those baggy shorts or oversized shirts even though you have slimmed down. But outside, in the corporate world, always remember that fit is king. That suit may be stylish and top of the range but if it won't fit then you haven't done anything at all. This means that fit is your foremost concern when it comes to the style pyramid that you are going to settle for (that is, before you think of fabric and function/style) for any clothing item.

Rule of thumb: If it doesn’t fit (and can’t be slightly adjusted to fit) – do NOT buy it. It won’t work.

PART THREE: LEVEL UP YOUR FOOTWEAR

"One of the first things people notice about you is the shoes on your feet. Wear nice ones!"

Still wearing running shoes all the time (even when you’re NOT running)? Well, in the corporate setting they make you appear less serious. So, here's an idea, explore other options.

Why? Well, like we have stated in our preamble, it boils down to a traditional school of thought that’s still alive and well these days: you can judge a man by his shoes. Like clothes shoes are also a big part of the first impression.

The statement above is true because people see shoes as a way of measuring your level of seriousness or assuming your career and social status. Interviewers, for example, can base their impression of you from the shoe you wear to the interview or aptitude test. Again, first impressions matter.
