Switching from Breastfeeding to Bottle Feeding : A Gentle Guide for Mums
For many mums, the decision to switch from breastfeeding to bottle feeding is a personal one. Whether it’s due to returning to work, health reasons, or simply choosing what works best for you and your baby, the transition can be smooth with the right approach.
1. Take It Slow
Instead of stopping breastfeeding abruptly, replace one feeding session with a bottle every few days. This gives your baby time to adjust to the new ni**le and feeding style while helping your body gradually reduce milk production.
2. Choose the Right Bottle & Teat
Pick a bottle that mimics the natural feel of the breast to make the transition easier. A slow flow teat is often best in the beginning, as it matches the pace of breastfeeding.
3. Use Expressed Breast Milk at First
If possible, start by offering bottles with your expressed breast milk. This way, your baby is adjusting only to the bottle, not to a new taste at the same time. You can gradually introduce formula later if you wish.
4. Let Someone Else Offer the Bottle
Babies sometimes refuse a bottle from mum because they can smell breast milk. Having your partner, family member, or nanny feed the baby can help them accept the change more easily.
5. Comfort & Cuddles Are Still Key
Bottle feeding is not just about nutrition it’s bonding time. Hold your baby close, maintain eye contact, and make feeding a calm, loving experience.
6. Watch for Signs of Readiness
Your baby might take to bottle feeding quickly, or it may take a few tries. Patience is key every baby is different.
