As African countries prepare for the possibility of another El NiΓ±o event in the 2026/2027 farming season, one important question remains: What will happen to smallholder farmers if drought conditions return?
Many smallholder farmers are still recovering from previous climate shocks, rising input costs, and limited access to irrigation. Another severe El NiΓ±o could lead to reduced crop yields, food insecurity, loss of income, and increased vulnerability for rural households.
This is the time for governments, development partners, and the private sector to strengthen climate resilience through early warning systems, drought-tolerant seed varieties, irrigation investments, and improved market access.
Preparation today can help protect livelihoods tomorrow.

πŸ“Š Current Commodity Prices in Lundazi: What Do They Tell Us?

Based on current market prices:

πŸ₯œ Groundnuts – K16.00/kg (K16,000 per tonne)
🫘 Soybeans – K8.50/kg (K8,500 per tonne)
🌻 Sunflower – K4.00/kg (K4,000 per tonne)
🌽 Maize – K2.50/kg (K2,500 per tonne)

From a revenue-per-tonne perspective, groundnuts are currently leading the market, followed by soybeans, sunflower, and maize.

While profitability ultimately depends on production costs, yields, and market access, these prices highlight the strong value that legumes and oilseed crops can offer to farmers and agribusinesses.

As Zambia continues to diversify its agricultural sector, it will be interesting to see how farmers balance high-value crops with staple crops such as maize.

We appreciate the efforts by the To***co Board of Zambia to secure a market for self-sponsored growers. This is a welcome development and provides some relief to farmers who invested their own resources during the 2025/2026 growing season.

However, the delay in securing a market has had a significant impact on many smallholder farmers. Months of uncertainty created financial pressure and made it difficult for farmers to plan, meet obligations, and confidently invest in future production.

Going forward, timely market arrangements and increased buyer participation will be essential to protecting farmers' investments and strengthening confidence in Zambia's to***co sector.

Smallholder farmers are the backbone of agricultural production, and ensuring reliable market access is key to the sustainability and growth of the industry.
