💊 POV:GIVING ORAL MEDICATION TO CHILDREN😅
Here are some tips every parent needs when administering oral medication:
✅ Give tiny amounts at a time
Instead of squirting 5ml at once, try 1ml → swallow → next 1ml. This can help reduce gagging.
✅ Aim for the cheek, not the tongue
Direct the syringe towards the inside of the cheek, near the back molars.
✅ Keep your child upright
This makes swallowing easier and can reduce gagging.
✅ Use a “chaser” if allowed
Water, milk, juice, an ice lolly, or a favourite drink can help wash away the taste.
✅ Chill the medicine (if appropriate)
Many medications taste less intense when cold.
✅ Don’t hide medicine in a large amount of food
If your child doesn’t finish the bottle or bowl, you won’t know how much medication was taken. Instead, mix it into 1–2 teaspoons of a favourite food and make sure it’s all eaten.
✅ Offer choices
Instead of “Do you want your medicine?” try “Would you like the blue syringe or the red syringe?” Giving some control can make a big difference.
🤢 For children who tend to vomit:
✔️ Give antibiotics with food if the medication allows it.
✔️ Avoid giving medicine during a coughing fit, as coughing can trigger vomiting.
✔️ Avoid force-feeding. Increased distress often leads to gagging and vomiting.
⚠️ Always follow the instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist, as some medications have specific administration requirements.
