QUICK BENEFITS CHECK-IN 📅👓

With about two months left in 2026, now's a great time to peek at your vision benefits. If they reset on January 1, any coverage you don't use by December 31 usually won't carry over.

Here's what to look for in your insurer's app or member site:
• Eye exam coverage for you and your family
• Your vision care or eyewear allowance
• Your next eligible date (some plans run on a 24-month cycle)
• Health spending account credits that expire at year-end

Routine eye exams for adults 19 to 64 aren't covered by AHCIP, so your workplace plan may be the way to cover yours. We direct bill many private insurers, including Blue Cross, Sun Life, Canada Life, and Manulife. Not sure if we can bill your plan directly? Just ask our team!

ASTIGMATISM & YOUR LITTLE LEARNER 👀✏️

Did you know astigmatism is often present from birth? It happens when the front of the eye is shaped a little more like a football than a basketball, so things can look blurry up close and far away.

Kids don't always mention when something's off. To them, the way they see is just normal! Signs to watch for:
• Squinting or tilting their head
• Rubbing their eyes often
• Headaches
• Losing interest in reading

The good news? Almost all levels of astigmatism can be corrected, often with glasses. 👓 For Alberta kids 18 and under, AHCIP covers one complete eye exam per benefit year (July 1–June 30).

3 CONTACT LENS CARE TIPS 👀💧

Healthy lens habits are easy to build, and your eyes will thank you for them!

🧼 Wash your hands, then dry them well before touching your lenses.
💧 Use fresh solution every time. Empty your case completely and never top off old solution with new.
📅 Replace your case regularly, at least every three months.

One more to remember: keep water away from your lenses. Never rinse or store your lenses or case in water, including tap, distilled, or bottled.

October is Contact Lens Safety Month, a good reminder that everyday habits play an important role in keeping your eyes healthy and comfortable. Here are three worth checking:

💧 Keep them away from water. Take your lenses out before swimming or showering, and always store them in fresh contact lens solution, never water. Water can carry germs that may lead to eye infections.

😴 Take them out before bed. Unless your optometrist has prescribed lenses for overnight wear, remove them before you sleep. Sleeping in lenses can increase the risk of an eye infection.

🎃 Costume lenses count too. Health Canada regulates decorative contact lenses as medical devices, and they carry the same kinds of risks as prescription lenses. Talk to your optometrist before adding them to a costume, and avoid any lenses that aren't licensed for sale in Canada.

WHEN WAS YOUR CHILD'S LAST EYE EXAM? 👀📚

October is Children's Vision Month. Kids rarely speak up about vision problems because they assume everyone sees the way they do.

Canada's optometrists recommend a first exam at 6–9 months, at least one between ages 2 and 5, and yearly exams once school starts. A full exam checks focusing, eye teaming and eye health, not just the letter chart. If it's been over a year, now's a great time to book. 👁️
