This weekend felt a little bit special ✂️

After 20 years of sewing, teaching, adapting patterns, and creating garments my own way… I finally took my first steps into drafting my own blocks.

I didn’t come from the traditional fashion design route. I learned through commercial patterns - figuring things out stitch by stitch, hack by hack, and building my confidence along the way. That process became my foundation.

So going back to the drawing table after all these years felt equal parts exciting, intimidating, and inspiring.

Under the guidance of Belfast’s award-winning designer , I spent the weekend learning, creating, and meeting some incredibly talented women who share the same passion for sewing and design.

I came away with lots of notes, a very inspired mind… and a few new goals for the vision board 👀

Maybe this is the beginning of something new.

Spent a few hours on Saturday in Wallace Park at the Majors Family Fun Day sharing sustainable skills through the power of stitch 🧵

I kept hearing people say, almost jokingly, “I can’t even sew a button” and honestly, that’s exactly why spaces like this matter. The secret was never really the button itself, but sharing knowledge, building confidence, and encouraging people to repair rather than throw away.

Watching people pick up a needle, give it a go, and realise they could do it was such a reminder that these small practical skills still have huge value - for sustainability, wellbeing, and connection.

Thank you so much to Jo at Lisburn & Castlereagh Council organisers for inviting me along and creating space for conversations like this. Practical skills should never go out of fashion ✨

The elephant in the final slide was made by my grandmother for my brother. Granny made me a little duck, and I remember lovingly playing with it in the sand.

Years later, my mum told me my granny was very unwell when she made them with makes me even more grateful for her gift ♥️

She asked us what teddy we wanted.
No shops. No Amazon back then! Just what she had in her home and what she could still give with her hands.

She made anyway. Not because it was easy, but because it mattered.

I think that’s where it began for me. Watching creation as care and making what you can.

Learning early that your hands hold power that you can bring something into the world simply because you imagine it.

Sewing, making, baking, creating was never a hobby in my family. It was love. It was necessary. It was resilience. It was legacy.

Who taught you to sew or make?
