Fine quality rubies can come today from several countries such as Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), Vietnam, Mozambique, Thailand, etc.

The finest colour of the ruby is a deep red with a hint of purple known as "pigeon's blood". Fine rubies glow with intense red in the sunlight thanks to red fluorescence which intensifies its red colour. Most rubies are often treated to achieve a purer red color. The very rare and most sought after rubies are spared of treatment of any kind and sell at much higher premium.

Rubies can be cut into a variety of shapes, but are most commonly cut into oval and cushion shapes because of the shape of the rough stone. Cabochon cuts are one of the most popular for enhancing the gem stone's colour and texture and are delightful like bonbons.

In this video we feature a pair of impressive unheated Burmese ruby cascade earrings with rhombus and old European-cut cushion diamonds, a magnificent addition to any jewellery collection.
