Man’s jama (robe), Bharatpur, c. 1855.

Constructed in fine muslin, this garment follows the traditional wrap format; crossing over the chest and fastening at the side. The silhouette is defined by its fullness: extensive yardage of fabric gathered at the bodice and released into a wide, flowing skirt.

The use of muslin is central to its effect. Lightweight and breathable, it allows for volume without weight, creating a form that is structured yet fluid. The fall of the textile, rather than tailoring alone, determines the final shape of the garment.
