Eid Mubarak to my Texas Muslim community 🌙
For the next three days, Muslim families will get together with loved ones, deck out in festive clothing, indulge in delicious cultural foods, and share a portion of their slaughter of an animal with the needy - in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) test of faith and submission to God, and his willingness to sacrifice his beloved son.
This Eid, or Eid-ul-Adha (“Feast of Sacrifice”) also follows the Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of the Islamic faith. These pillars include profession of faith, five daily prayers, fasting in the month of Ramadan, and giving charity.
Eid is an Islamic holiday, and occurs twice a year, once after the fasting month of Ramadan, and once after the culmination of Hajj, an annual pilgrimage to Makkah (and surrounding areas).
Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is the Islamic holiday that begins on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, during Hajj.
As the Muslim community has been targeted with hate and violence over the past few years, most recently at the Islamic Center of San Diego, I urge conscientious Americans to stand in solidarity with my community.
Together, we make America better and stronger!
